Do you need a $20,000 agency to sell candles online, or will a $350 theme and a long weekend do? For most new stores in 2027, a Shopify website that looks professional costs between $0 and $2,500 to design, and a store with real custom work costs $2,000 to $10,000. Agency builds run $10,000 to $50,000, and Shopify Plus projects usually start around $50,000.
Those numbers sit on a ladder, and each rung buys something specific. The trick is knowing which rung your store actually needs, because past a certain point the extra money pays for the designer’s process rather than for more sales. We priced every rung using Shopify’s own pricing page, published freelancer and agency rate surveys, and complaints from store owners who climbed too high or not high enough. If you have not chosen a plan yet, start with our Shopify pricing guide, since the plan bill keeps coming long after the designer’s invoice is paid.
Six rungs, from a free theme to Shopify Plus
| Rung | Who does the work | Design cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | You, with a free theme | $0 | A clean store on Horizon, Dawn or another free Shopify theme |
| 2 | You, with a premium theme | About $180 to $400, one time | More layouts and built-in features, licensed for one store |
| 3 | Freelancer sets up a theme | About $1,000 to $2,500 | Products, pages, navigation, payments and shipping configured for you |
| 4 | Freelancer or small studio customizes | About $2,000 to $10,000 | Theme edits, custom sections, app integrations, brand polish |
| 5 | Agency build | About $10,000 to $50,000 | Discovery, custom design, custom theme code, migration |
| 6 | Shopify Plus agency | $50,000 and up | Enterprise build, plus a plan that starts at $2,300 a month |
The ranges overlap on purpose. A senior freelancer charging $150 an hour can land in rung 5 territory, and a lean agency can quote a rung 4 job. Price the scope, not the title on the business card.
Rungs 1 and 2: a free theme, or $180 to $400 for a premium one
Shopify’s free themes are better than their price suggests. Horizon, Dawn, Sense and Refresh are fast, mobile-friendly and maintained by Shopify, and one theme vendor counts roughly two dozen free options in the official Theme Store. A store selling a few dozen products with good photos can launch on one of them and look credible.
Premium themes on the official store usually cost about $180 to $400, with a few above that. You pay once, updates from the developer are included, and the license covers one live store. Open a second store, even a test clone, and you buy the theme again. Third-party marketplaces sell Shopify themes for roughly $20 to $200, but those are not reviewed by Shopify, and support depends entirely on the seller.
What a premium theme buys is mostly built-in features: mega menus, size charts, quick view, richer product galleries. Each one is a feature you might otherwise rent as an app for $15 to $50 a month. That is the best case for paying: a $350 theme that replaces two apps at $20 a month pays for itself in under nine months.
Shopify has also made the do-it-yourself rungs easier. Its Winter ’26 Edition, released in December 2025, lets owners ask Sidekick, the built-in AI assistant, to change theme elements in plain language, such as making a button rounded, and to make edits directly in the theme editor. That covers the small tweaks that used to mean an hour of paid freelancer time. It does not write your product copy, shoot your photos or decide how your brand should look.
Signs you have outgrown doing it yourself
- You have spent more than 20 hours fiddling with the theme editor and the store still looks unfinished.
- You need payments, taxes or shipping rules you do not fully understand.
- You are importing hundreds of products or moving from another platform.
Rung 3: a freelancer installs and configures, about $1,000 to $2,500
This is the most common paid job on Shopify, and it is mostly configuration rather than design. The freelancer installs your chosen theme, loads products and collections, sets up payments, shipping zones, taxes and legal pages, connects your domain, and adjusts colors and fonts to match your logo. Storetasker’s April 2026 rate guide puts a simple freelancer store setup at $1,000 to $2,500.
Hourly rates explain the spread. Upwork lists typical Shopify developer rates from about $15 an hour for beginners to $95 for experts, with a median between $15 and $29, and most of that low end is overseas talent. First Pier’s 2026 hiring guide puts US freelancers at $50 to $150 an hour for junior to mid-level work and $150 to $250 for senior specialists. A 15-hour setup is $225 at the bottom of Upwork and $2,250 with a mid-priced US freelancer.
The trap at this rung is paying rung 4 money for rung 3 work. One store owner’s account on DEV Community, written by someone who now works for a competing studio, describes paying a development company about 12,000 UAE dirhams, roughly $3,300, for what turned out to be a stock theme with a new logo, with mobile fixes billed extra. Ask for the hours estimate and the list of deliverables in writing, and you will know which rung you are buying.
Rung 4: $2,000 to $10,000 of customization, where most stores should stop
First Pier prices theme customization and mid-sized builds at $2,000 to $10,000. Storetasker puts a freelancer’s custom theme work with app integrations at $3,000 to $6,000. At this rung you keep a premium theme as the foundation and pay for what makes the store yours: custom sections for a product story, a bundle builder, a subscription flow, a reworked product page, cleaner mobile layouts and integration with your email, reviews and shipping apps.
For a store doing less than a few hundred thousand dollars a year, this is usually where value stops climbing. A well-chosen theme with targeted custom work loads fast, stays compatible with Shopify’s theme updates and can be edited by you or the next freelancer. A fully custom theme from scratch costs several times more, and the gain shows up mainly when you have enough traffic to test and measure it.
- Worth paying for: product page work, mobile fixes, speed cleanup, app integrations that remove manual tasks.
- Usually padding: a fresh custom theme for a 30-product catalog, animations nobody asked for, a “brand discovery” phase billed at agency rates to a one-person business.
Rungs 5 and 6: agency builds and the $50,000 Shopify Plus floor
Agencies charge for a team and a process. First Pier puts blended agency rates at $125 to $300 an hour, and Storetasker splits them into boutique shops at $90 to $125, mid-sized at $125 to $175 and premium firms at $200 or more. Project quotes follow: Storetasker lists $5,000 to $10,000 for a basic agency setup and $15,000 to $35,000 for mid-tier work, while First Pier prices a full custom build or platform migration at $10,000 to $50,000 or more.
That money buys things a freelancer rarely offers: a project manager, a designer and a developer working in parallel, user research, a migration plan for thousands of products and customer accounts, and someone accountable if launch day breaks. For a brand moving off another platform with years of order history, it can be cheaper than a botched move. For a new store with no customers yet, it is usually premature.
Shopify Plus builds start at about $50,000, according to both First Pier and Storetasker, and the plan itself starts at $2,300 a month on Shopify’s pricing page, or more than $27,000 a year before a single design invoice. Plus earns its keep for high-volume stores that need checkout customization, multiple storefronts or wholesale tools. Below that, it is a very expensive way to look established.
The bills that start after the designer leaves
A design quote covers launch. Running the store is a separate budget, and it is where many owners lose track. Shopify’s plans cost $39 a month for Basic, $105 for Grow and $399 for Advanced when billed monthly, or $29, $79 and $299 a month on yearly billing. New stores get three free days, then pay $1 a month for three months. Online card payments on Basic cost 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction.
Apps are the creeping cost. Storetasker cites review apps at $15 to $50 a month, upsell apps at $30 to $100 and subscription apps at $20 to $300. Merchants on Reddit and Shopify’s own forums describe app bills of $400 to $700 a month once a store matures. Post-launch support adds more: Storetasker puts agency retainers at $500 to $3,000 a month, and First Pier reports a range from about $1,500 for light maintenance to $15,000 or more. We found no Shopify announcement of 2027 plan price changes as of November 2026, but plan prices have risen before, so check the pricing page when you budget.
Hypothetical example, built from the ranges above. The same small store, selling about 40 products, priced three ways for its first year:
| First-year cost | DIY, free theme | Premium theme plus freelancer | Mid-tier agency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theme | $0 | $350 | Included |
| Design and setup | $0 | $1,800 | $20,000 |
| Shopify plan, yearly billing | $348 (Basic) | $348 (Basic) | $948 (Grow) |
| Apps | $600 | $600 | $1,200 |
| Support retainer | $0 | $0 | $12,000 ($1,000 a month) |
| Total | $948 | $3,098 | $34,148 |
The middle column costs about $2,150 more than doing it yourself and buys weeks of your time back. The agency column costs eleven times the middle one. It makes sense only if the store is already selling enough that a better-converting site pays back $31,000 within a year or two.
Shopify build questions the quote won’t answer
How long does it take to build a Shopify website?
A simple setup on an existing theme often takes one to two weeks with a freelancer. Customized stores usually take several weeks, and agency builds and migrations can take months; one Shopify Plus project Storetasker describes ran three and a half. Your own speed at supplying photos, product data and copy is often the biggest delay.
Who owns the Shopify store if I hire a designer?
You should. Create the Shopify account in your own name, pay the plan with your own card and give the designer collaborator access rather than your password. Ask in writing that custom theme code and design files belong to you once the invoice is paid.
Can I use one paid Shopify theme on two stores?
No. A theme bought from the Shopify Theme Store is licensed for one live store, so a second store, including a clone, needs its own purchase. Updates for the original store remain free.
Is Shopify website design pricing negotiable?
Often, at the freelancer and small-studio level. Cutting scope is the most reliable lever: fewer custom sections, your own product uploads or a premium theme in place of custom code. Fixed-price quotes with a clear deliverables list are easier to compare than hourly estimates.
Will Shopify’s AI tools replace a designer?
For small changes, increasingly yes. Shopify’s Winter 2026 Edition lets Sidekick edit theme elements from plain-language requests. It does not replace product photography, brand design, migration work or custom features, which is where most of a designer’s fee goes.
What a Shopify quote should spell out, line by line
- Which theme the build starts from, and whether its license fee is included.
- Every page and custom section being designed, by name.
- Who loads the products, and how many.
- Which apps will be installed, with each one’s monthly fee.
- The number of revision rounds, and the hourly rate after that.
- Mobile testing on named devices before final payment.
- Ownership: the store in your name, the code and files yours on payment.
