How much do acrylic nails cost: nail technician sculpting a full set of acrylic nails on a client's hands at a salon table

A full set is priced up front; the fills every two to three weeks are what add up.

Two coworkers book the same Saturday. One pays $45 for a basic full set of acrylic nails at a neighborhood shop; the other pays $110 for long coffin tips with chrome at a studio downtown. Both prices are normal: most US salons charge $40 to $80 for a short-to-medium full set, budget shops start around $25, and major-metro studios pass $120 once art is added.

What surprises people is that the gap between them on day one is small next to the gap a year later. Acrylics grow out, and a fill every two to three weeks is what keeps them wearable. Treat the full set as the entry fee and the fill as the bill, and the real cost of the habit comes into focus.

The salon menu, read line by line

These are typical pre-tip prices on US salon menus in late 2026, drawn from national price surveys and booking-platform listings. Your city matters: New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco studios commonly sit at $50 to $100 for a plain full set, while smaller markets can start near $30.

ServiceBudget shopMid-range salonUpscale studio
Full set, short to medium, plain color$25 to $55$60 to $80$90 to $120+
Fill (rebalance the regrowth)$15 to $35$40 to $55$60 to $80
Removal (soak-off)$10 to $15$20 to $25$30 to $40
Single-nail repair$5 to $10$10 to $15$15+
Polish change on existing acrylicsOften $10 to $20$20 to $30Varies

Two notes before you compare menus. Many salons quote removal free if you are getting a new set from them the same visit, but charge it when you walk in with another shop’s work. And “full set” at one salon may mean tips plus acrylic with regular polish, while at another it means a bare clear overlay with color billed separately. Ask what the base price actually includes.

Length, shape and art: where a $50 set turns into $95

The base price usually assumes short, square or round nails in one color. Everything past that is an add-on, and they stack:

  • Extra length: about $5 to $25, scaled by tier (medium, long, extra long). Long sets use more product and time, so expect the surcharge again on every fill.
  • Specialty shape: coffin, stiletto or almond typically adds around $10.
  • Gel color instead of regular polish: roughly $10 to $15 at many salons, up to about $25 at some. It is the add-on most people end up wanting, because regular polish chips within days on acrylic.
  • French, ombré or colored acrylic: about $5 to $15.
  • Chrome or decals: about $5 to $15.
  • Hand-painted art, stones or 3D work: $5 to $10 for a simple accent nail, $20 to $50 or more for detailed art across several nails.

Booking apps help here. Many independent nail techs list each add-on as its own line, so you can see the total before you sit down instead of hearing it at the register. If a salon will not price your inspiration photo in advance, that is your cue to ask for a number before the first tip goes on.

One year of acrylics, priced by how often you go back

Most nail techs recommend a fill every two to three weeks, before the growth line at the cuticle lets the tip lever off. The table below assumes one full set at the start of the year, then fills only, with a 20% tip on every visit. Midpoint menu prices, no art.

Salon tier (set / fill before tip)Fill every 3 weeks (17 visits)Fill every 2 weeks (26 visits)
Budget ($35 / $25)About $520About $790
Mid-range ($60 / $40)About $840About $1,270
Upscale ($100 / $65)About $1,370About $2,070

The cadence moves the bill as much as the salon does. Stretching from two weeks to three saves about a third, and a mid-range salon visited every three weeks costs about the same over a year as a budget shop visited every two. That is the number to compare when you are tempted by a cheap full set.

Hypothetical example, built from typical menu prices rather than a real receipt. Say you want medium coffin nails in gel color at a mid-range salon. The first visit: $60 full set, plus $10 for the coffin shape and $15 for gel color, is $85; with a 20% tip, $102. Each fill: $45 with the shape surcharge, plus $15 gel, is $60; tipped, $72. At a fill every three weeks, the year runs $102 plus 16 fills at $72, or about $1,254. Go every two weeks and it is about $1,902. Add a $20 to $25 professional removal when you finally take a break, and art on even a couple of nails per visit can push the year past $2,000.

Why a $25 full set deserves a second look

Plenty of honest salons run lean and charge little. But the cheapest sets sometimes reflect the liquid in the dish. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is a bonding monomer that state cosmetology boards warn about: the FDA moved against nail products made with it in the 1970s after injury complaints, and many states bar salons from using it. Arizona’s cosmetology board notes it costs roughly a third as much as standard ethyl methacrylate (EMA) liquid, which is why it still turns up.

Regulators link MMA to allergic reactions, skin and breathing irritation, and in bad cases lasting nail damage. Warning signs listed by state boards:

  • An unusually strong, sharp odor, different from the usual acrylic smell
  • Nails that set extremely hard and are tough to file
  • Product that will not soak off with normal acetone, so the tech pries or drills it off
  • Unlabeled liquid containers, or a refusal to tell you what is in them

You can simply ask whether the salon uses EMA or MMA liquid. A reputable tech answers without hesitating. Ventilation, clean tools and a visible state license are the other things a low price should not cost you.

Acrylic next to Gel-X, dip and press-ons

If the fill math above gives you pause, here is how acrylics compare with the other ways people get long or durable nails. Ranges are typical salon menu prices and vary widely by market.

OptionTypical first visitHow it is maintainedBest for
Acrylic full set$40 to $80Fills every 2 to 3 weeksLong length, sculpted shapes, strength
Gel extensions (soft-gel tips such as Gel-X)Roughly $50 to $100Usually a fresh set every 3 to 4 weeksLighter feel, softer look
Builder gel overlayRoughly $40 to $80Fills every 3 to 4 weeksStrengthening natural length
Dip powderRoughly $35 to $60Usually a fresh set every 3 to 4 weeksShort to medium, no extra length
Press-on nails (at home)Roughly $8 to $25 per kitReapply as needed; some sets reusableEvents, trying a length first

Acrylic wins on length and durability; it is also the easiest to repair one nail at a time. Gel extensions and dip often cost more per visit but stretch longer between appointments, so the yearly totals can land closer than the menus suggest. Run the same year-long math before you switch.

Tipping, taxes and what 2027 menus may look like

Menu prices almost never include the tip. The standard in US nail salons is 15% to 20% of the pre-discount service price, more for complex art or a last-minute squeeze-in. Some states and cities also charge sales tax on personal-care services, so check your receipt.

No industry body publishes official 2027 nail prices, and we found no announced 2027 price changes. Salons commonly revise prices in January as product and rent costs change, so expect similar or slightly higher prices for full sets and fills in 2027. If your tech raises prices, the fill line matters far more to your annual cost than the full set does.

Five questions to ask before you book

  1. What does the base set include? Tips, shaping, polish or gel, and up to what length.
  2. Is the length or shape surcharge charged again on fills? At many salons it is.
  3. What is the fill price, and after how many weeks does a fill become a new set? Some salons charge full-set price past three or four weeks.
  4. Is removal included when I come back for a new set?
  5. Do you use EMA liquid? The only acceptable answer is yes.

With those answers, multiply the tipped fill price by the number of visits you will realistically make in a year. That figure, not the full-set price on the sign, is what acrylic nails cost you.

Acrylic nail cost questions

How much does it cost to get your nails done?

It depends on the service. A basic polish manicure is usually the cheapest option, a gel manicure costs more, and acrylic full sets typically run $40 to $80 at mid-range salons before a 15% to 20% tip. Long lengths, special shapes and nail art add to any of these.

How long does a full set of acrylics take?

A plain full set usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Long lengths, sculpted shapes or detailed art can push it to two hours or more, which is part of why those sets cost more. Fills are typically shorter.

Can I remove acrylic nails at home?

Many people soak them off at home with pure acetone, filing off the top layer first and soaking for 15 to 30 minutes until the product softens. Never pry or rip acrylics off, which can peel layers of the natural nail. If the product will not soften, have a salon remove it.

Do acrylic nails damage your natural nails?

Applied and removed correctly, acrylics mainly thin the nail surface through filing. Most damage comes from over-filing, prying them off, or leaving lifted nails unrepaired so moisture gets trapped underneath. A dermatologist can advise if you notice pain, discoloration or separation.

What happens if I wait four weeks for a fill?

The longer gap leaves more regrowth and raises the risk of lifting and breaks, since the nail’s balance point shifts forward. Many salons charge more for a heavily grown-out fill, and some treat anything past three or four weeks as a new full set.
