You roll into the bay, stay in the driver’s seat, and within a minute someone is asking which oil you want, whether you have a coupon, and if they can show you your air filter. A Take 5 oil change heading into 2027 runs about $45 to $60 for the entry synthetic-blend tier, $80 to $105 for full synthetic and $115 to $125 or more for the top premium synthetic, before extra quarts, add-ons and tax. Those three questions at the window decide whether you leave paying $45 or $200.
Take 5 does not post a national price list; its pricing page says the cost depends on your vehicle, the oil and the shop. So the smart move is to build your own total before you pull in, then compare it with what the tech recommends. Want a second opinion on other repairs? Try our car repair cost estimator.
Question one: which oil tier you pick
Take 5 sells oil changes in packages rather than by the bottle. Its own oil-types page describes the cheapest tier, Economy, as a synthetic blend (Take 5 says its “conventional” is actually a blend), with Core, Complete and Ultimate stepping up through full synthetic to advanced full synthetic. Package names and what goes in them have shifted over time and can differ by shop, so ask which oil is in the package you’re quoted. Recent reported prices:
| Tier (oil type) | Typical reported price, up to 5 quarts | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Economy (synthetic blend) | $43 to $60 | Older engines that call for conventional or blend oil |
| High mileage blend | $80 to $90 | Engines past 75,000 miles with minor seepage |
| Full synthetic | $86 to $104 | Most cars built in the last 15 years |
| Premium advanced synthetic (Mobil 1 or top tier) | $119 to $125+ | Turbo engines, European cars, owners who want the top spec |
| Each extra quart over 5 | About $8 to $14 | Trucks, V8s and many SUVs |
The tier that matters is the one your owner’s manual names, not the one the menu board pushes. If your manual calls for a 0W-20 full synthetic, the blend tier is not a bargain; it’s the wrong oil. If your 2009 truck runs fine on 5W-30 blend, paying for the premium tier buys little you’ll notice. Location matters too: one guide found the same full synthetic at $89.99 in Houston and $104.99 in Los Angeles.
Question two: how many quarts your engine holds
Every tier price covers about five quarts. That fits most four-cylinder cars and many V6s. Plenty of trucks, SUVs and performance engines take six to eight quarts, and each extra one is billed separately, typically around $8 for blend and up to about $14 for premium synthetic.
This is where sticker shock usually comes from. Motor1 reported a customer whose truck needed three extra quarts at $14 each on top of a $123.49 top-tier package; she said she paid about $180 all in. Look up your oil capacity (it’s in the manual under specifications) and multiply before you go.
Question three: the add-ons offered while you wait
Every Take 5 change includes the new oil, a new oil filter, fluid top-offs and a tire pressure check. Beyond that, the crew will show you items they recommend. Take 5’s line is “We recommend, you decide,” and you can say no to any of them. Here is what the common ones run, and what the same job costs if you handle it yourself.
| Add-on | Reported Take 5 price | DIY or elsewhere | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine air filter | $20 to $40 | Filter alone often $15 to $30; a 5-minute swap on most cars | Fair if it is actually dirty; ask to see it held to the light |
| Cabin air filter | $40 to $65 | Parts $13 to $33; usually behind the glovebox | The easiest one to do yourself |
| Wiper blades | $20 to $50 a pair | Similar at parts stores, which often install free | Say yes only if they streak or chatter |
| Coolant exchange | $100 to $160 | Check your manual’s interval; many modern coolants last 100,000+ miles | Decline unless your mileage or a test says it’s due |
| Engine flush | $15 to $30 | Not called for in most owner’s manuals | Usually skip |
Take 5 also lists differential fluid, fuel injection cleaning and diesel fuel filter service at many shops. Those are legitimate jobs on some vehicles, but they belong on your maintenance schedule, not on a whim at the window. If you aren’t sure, ask for the recommendation in writing and look it up at home.
Two sample receipts, start to finish
Examples only. These are hypothetical visits built from the reported price ranges above, not real invoices. Tax is left out.
| Line | Compact sedan, says yes to everything | Midsize SUV, prepared driver |
|---|---|---|
| Full synthetic package | $99.99 | $99.99 |
| Extra quarts | None (4.4-quart engine) | 1 quart at $13.99 |
| Online coupon | Not used | -$15.00 |
| Engine air filter | $34.99 | Checked, still clean: declined |
| Cabin air filter | $54.99 | Declined; replaced at home for $20 |
| Wiper blades | $39.99 | Declined |
| Paid at Take 5 | $229.96 | $98.98 |
Same chain, same oil, a $131 gap. The SUV driver even had the bigger engine. The difference came from a coupon, knowing the quart count, and a “not today” on two filters that were either fine or cheap to do in a driveway.
The discounts Take 5 actually offers
- $15 off a Core, Complete or Ultimate change. Claimed online and delivered by email or text, so you have to sign up for Take 5 marketing messages. You can unsubscribe afterward.
- 25% off for veterans and military on any oil change, claimed at the shop.
- 15% off for rideshare drivers who show their rideshare sticker.
- Fleet accounts save 10% to 25% on oil changes and other services, depending on fleet size.
Offers vary by location and don’t always stack, so ask before the oil goes in. On a $100 full synthetic, the military discount alone saves $25, more than the coupon.
How Take 5 stacks up against other quick lubes
| Chain | Entry oil | Full synthetic | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Take 5 | $50 to $60 | $80 to $104 | Stay in your car, about 10 minutes |
| Valvoline Instant Oil Change | $45 to $65 | $80 to $110 | Stay in your car |
| Jiffy Lube | $50 to $80 | $90 to $110 | Waiting room, varies by store |
| Walmart Auto Care | $28.88 | $72.88 to $76.88 | Drop off, longer waits |
Take 5 is rarely the cheapest oil change in town. What you pay extra for is speed: no appointment, no waiting room and usually under 15 minutes from pulling in to pulling out. If your time is cheap and Walmart’s bay is open, you’ll save $20 to $30. If you’d otherwise lose an hour, the premium is easy to justify, as long as the add-ons don’t double it.
Will Take 5 prices go up in 2027?
Take 5 has not announced 2027 prices, and because each shop sets its own menu, there may never be a single number to announce. Expect similar or slightly higher prices in 2027, especially for full synthetic. One former employee quoted by Motor1 claimed menu prices rose several times in about 18 months, so a coupon matters more than it used to.
The other quiet cost driver is your car. Newer engines increasingly specify thin full-synthetic grades such as 0W-16 and 0W-8 that meet the latest API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 standards, which arrived in 2025. If you swap an older car for a newer one in 2027, plan on the full synthetic tier being your floor, not an upgrade.
Your pre-visit checklist
- Find your oil grade and capacity in the owner’s manual. Write them on your phone.
- Grab the $15 coupon online, or bring your military ID or rideshare sticker.
- Ask the window for the all-in price for your tier, including extra quarts, before they start.
- Check when you last replaced the air filters. If it was under a year ago, you can probably decline.
- For anything over $50 that isn’t an oil change, ask for the recommendation and the mileage interval, then decide at home.
- Keep the receipt. It’s your proof of maintenance for warranty claims and resale.
Take 5 oil change questions drivers ask
How much is an oil change at Take 5 with a coupon?
With the $15 online coupon, an entry-tier change often lands between the high $20s and mid $40s, and full synthetic in the $70s to high $80s before extra quarts and tax. The coupon applies to the Core, Complete and Ultimate packages, so confirm your shop accepts it before service starts.
How long does a Take 5 oil change take?
Take 5 says most visits take about 10 minutes, and you stay in your car. Lines on Saturday mornings and weekday evenings can add 15 to 30 minutes of waiting before you reach the bay.
Will a Take 5 oil change void my car’s warranty?
No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer can’t void your warranty just because you used an independent shop. Make sure they use oil that meets your manual’s grade and specification, and keep every receipt as proof.
Does Take 5 change oil on diesel trucks?
Many Take 5 shops offer diesel oil changes and diesel fuel filter replacement. Diesels hold far more oil than cars, often 10 quarts or more, so expect a much higher bill and ask for the all-in price first.
Can I use the military discount and a coupon together?
Take 5 doesn’t publish a stacking rule, and policies vary by shop. Ask before service; if they won’t combine them, the 25% military discount usually saves more than the $15 coupon on a full synthetic change.
