Type “Panama City” into a flight search and half the results will try to sell you a trip to the Florida Panhandle (airport code ECP). Fix that to PTY, Tocumen International, and a round trip from the US to Panama City, Panama usually costs $500 to $800, with fall 2026 sale fares from Miami as low as about $320 and peak December averages near $750 to $800.
The single biggest factor is not the airline or the day you book. It is the airport you leave from. Panama is a hub-airline country: Copa Airlines flies about 250 nonstops a week to the US, so a city with a Copa nonstop often prices well below a city that has to connect through Miami or Houston. Find your gateway below, then adjust for season and baggage.
Find your departure city: fares by US gateway
Panama’s tourism authority lists nonstop service to Tocumen from 19 US airports, flown by Copa, American, United and Delta. The low fares below are the cheapest round trips KAYAK showed from each area in fall 2026; they are what a well-timed booking can get, not a guarantee.
| Departure region | Nonstop airports | Low round-trip fares seen | Nonstop flight time |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Florida | MIA, FLL | $322 (Miami), $369 (Fort Lauderdale) | About 3 hr |
| Central and Gulf Florida | MCO, TPA | $355 to $441 (Orlando), $383 (Tampa) | About 3.5 hr |
| Southeast and Texas | ATL, RDU, IAH, AUS | From about $380 (Atlanta) | About 3.5 to 4.5 hr |
| Northeast and Mid-Atlantic | JFK, EWR, BOS, IAD, BWI | $365 (JFK), $387 (Washington), $419 (Boston), $577 (Newark) | About 5 hr |
| Midwest and Mountain | ORD, DEN | From about $397 (Chicago) | About 5.5 to 6 hr |
| West Coast and Nevada | LAX, SFO, SAN, LAS | $475 (Los Angeles), $586 (San Francisco) | About 6 to 7 hr |
| Everywhere else | Connect via a hub | Usually typical-range fares, $500 to $800+ | 7 hr and up with a connection |
Two things jump out. Miami averages around $412 round trip, the lowest of any US city, because Copa, American and Avianca compete on it. And the gap between a sale fare and an ordinary one is wide everywhere: Cheapflights showed a JFK route price near $760 and Delta from Chicago at $797 even as $365 and $397 deals appeared from those cities.
No nonstop from home? Do the drive-or-connect math
If you live in Nashville, Phoenix or Charlotte, you will connect anyway. The question is where. A connection on American through Miami or Dallas, United through Houston or Newark, or Delta through Atlanta gets you there in one ticket. The alternative is positioning yourself to a Copa gateway on a cheap domestic flight or a long drive.
- Connect on one ticket when the through fare is within about $150 of the gateway fare. You keep protection if the first flight is late, and your bag is checked through.
- Position yourself when the gap is $250 or more per person and you can add a buffer of several hours, or a night, before the international flight. Two separate tickets mean a missed connection is your problem.
- Drive to a gateway when one is within about three hours: Raleigh-Durham for much of North Carolina, Baltimore for Philadelphia-area travelers, Austin for San Antonio. Price airport parking for the full trip before you call it a saving.
December costs the most; October and spring cost the least
Panama’s dry season runs roughly mid-December through April, which is when most Americans want to go, and Christmas travel by Panamanian families living in the US pushes December higher still.
| Travel period | Average US round trip | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| October | About $584 (KAYAK, cheapest month) | Rainy season, low demand |
| April to May | About $600 (Cheapflights, April) | End of dry season, after Easter |
| July | About $698 | US summer vacations |
| December | About $741 to $796 | Holidays plus start of dry season |
Rainy season in Panama City usually means a heavy afternoon storm, not a washed-out week, so October and November trips can be a real bargain for city, canal and food travel. Beach and island trips are a different story; check the season for your actual destination.
Copa’s fare buckets and what a checked bag adds
Copa carries most US travelers to Panama, and its cheapest fare is easy to misread. Every Copa fare includes a free carry-on (up to 22 x 14 x 10 inches and 22 lb) and a personal item. The difference is checked baggage.
| Copa fare | Checked bags included | Extra bag pricing (international, published chart) |
|---|---|---|
| Economy Basic | None | First bag about $38, second about $53, each way |
| Economy Classic / Classic Flex | One, 50 lb | Second bag about $55 each way |
| Economy Full | Two, 50 lb each | Third bag and beyond $150 each |
| Business | Two, 70 lb each | Third bag and beyond $150 each |
American, United and Delta use the same basic-economy logic with their own rules on seats, changes and bags. On any airline, compare the cheapest fare plus the bags you will actually check against the next fare up. A weeklong city trip fits in a carry-on; a month in Boquete or a wedding with formal wear usually does not.
Two travelers from Chicago: Basic vs Classic, side by side
Hypothetical example using round, illustrative fares and the baggage chart above, not a real quote. A couple flying Chicago O’Hare to Panama City nonstop in late April sees Economy Basic at $520 per person and Classic at $580. Each wants one checked bag.
| Line item | Economy Basic | Economy Classic |
|---|---|---|
| Two round-trip fares | $1,040 | $1,160 |
| Checked bags (2 people x 2 directions) | 4 x $38 = $152 | Included |
| Total | $1,192 | $1,160 |
Classic wins by $32 here and comes with more flexibility. Flip the assumption to carry-on only and Basic saves $120. The point is to decide about bags first, then pick the fare, never the other way around.
The budget airline that disappeared
Florida travelers used to have an ultra-low-cost option: Spirit Airlines sold Fort Lauderdale and Orlando flights to Panama City. Spirit ceased operations on May 2, 2026, after two Chapter 11 filings, according to Colombian newspaper El Universal. That leaves the US-Panama market to Copa and the three big US carriers, plus Avianca connections through Central America and Colombia. With fewer seats from the low-cost end, the very cheap Florida fares that used to show up are now mostly Copa and American sales.
What to expect for 2027 fares
No airline publishes fares a year out, and no 2027 fare changes for this route have been announced. Expect prices similar to the ranges above, possibly a little higher for December 2027 and holiday weeks. A few things are known:
- More Copa flights this winter. Copa is adding a fifth weekly flight on its Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Raleigh-Durham and San Diego routes from around December 2026 into January 2027, according to The Bulkhead Seat. More seats on thinner routes tend to help fares.
- A transit tax is only a proposal. A bill in Panama’s National Assembly would raise the fee on connecting passengers at Tocumen from $1.25 to $10. As of La Prensa’s March 2026 report it had not passed committee, and airport and tourism officials oppose it. It would mainly affect travelers connecting through Panama to South America, not those ending their trip there.
- Taxes stay in the ticket. US and Panamanian airport taxes are built into the fare you see on airline and travel-site checkouts, so the quoted round trip is close to your real airfare before bags and seats.
Turn a connection into a free stopover
If Panama City is a stop on the way to Colombia, Peru or Costa Rica rather than the destination, Copa’s Panama Stopover program lets you break the trip in Panama for up to 15 days at no extra airfare, up from the old seven-day cap. The program site also lists hotel, tour and restaurant discounts of up to 48%. Build the stopover when you book; adding it later usually means a fare change.
Before you buy: the entry rules that affect your ticket
US citizens do not need a visa for tourist trips and can generally stay up to 180 days. Airlines and Panamanian immigration can ask for three things that matter at booking time:
- A return or onward ticket. One-way travelers can be refused boarding, so a cheap one-way fare is only cheap if you also hold an exit ticket.
- A passport book valid at least three months past arrival. The passport card is not accepted for air travel. Renewing? Our passport cost guide has current fees and timelines.
- Proof of at least $500 in funds, such as a credit card or bank statement, if an officer asks.
Entry rules can change, so confirm them on the US State Department’s Panama page before you fly.
Panama City flight questions
How much is a one-way flight to Panama City, Panama?
One-way fares from the US typically run about $248 to $518, with the cheapest fall 2026 deals near $220 from Miami. One-way tickets often cost more than half a round trip, and you still need proof of onward travel to enter Panama.
How far ahead should I book flights to Panama?
KAYAK data suggests booking about nine weeks before departure saves roughly 20% compared with buying in the final two weeks. For December and the January to April dry season, start watching fares three to four months out.
Which Panama City airport do flights from the US use?
International flights land at Tocumen International (PTY), about 15 miles east of downtown. Albrook (PAC) handles mostly domestic flights to places like Bocas del Toro and David, so a beach add-on usually means a separate airport transfer.
Can I use airline miles for flights to Panama City?
Yes. Copa is a Star Alliance member, so programs such as United MileagePlus can book Copa flights, and American and Delta miles work on their own Panama routes. Award prices change with demand, so compare the miles needed against the cash fare.
Is Wednesday the cheapest day to fly to Panama?
Sources disagree. KAYAK’s data shows Wednesday departures averaging slightly less than Saturdays, while Cheapflights points to Saturday afternoons. The difference is usually small next to the effect of your departure city and month.
