An Amana top-load washer and matching electric dryer were selling as a set at Home Depot for $1,038 this fall, while a Speed Queen TC5 washer and DC5 dryer cost close to $3,000 for the pair. Most households land between those two numbers, roughly $1,000 to $2,300 for a new set before installation, and the smartest buyers do not split that money evenly between the two machines.
Retailers sell laundry as matched pairs at matched prices, but the washer and the dryer are very different machines. The washer spins a wet, heavy load at high speed, pumps water and lives or dies on its bearings, suspension and control board. A conventional dryer is a heated drum turned by a belt. That gap is the key to spending well, and it shows up clearly once you price each machine by the year instead of by the sticker.
What a pair costs at each level right now
These are real listed prices from US retailers in mid to late 2026, plus the national ranges HomeGuide reports. Sale prices move weekly, so treat specific models as reference points rather than quotes.
| Tier | Example | Price seen |
|---|---|---|
| Budget top-load pair | Amana 3.8 cu. ft. top-load washer + 6.5 cu. ft. electric dryer (Home Depot set) | $1,038 on sale ($519 each), $1,338 regular |
| Mid-range front-load pair | LG 5.0 cu. ft. front-load washer + 7.4 cu. ft. electric dryer package (Best Buy, July 2026) | About $2,000 |
| Stacked single unit | LG WashTower front-load washer + electric dryer | About $1,800 on sale |
| Heavy-duty top-load pair | Speed Queen TC5 washer ($1,499, MSRP $1,649) + DC5 electric dryer (about $1,499) | About $3,000 |
| All-in-one heat pump combo | GE Profile, Samsung Bespoke AI or LG WashCombo (one machine) | About $2,200 to $2,300 |
| National typical ranges | Washer $700 to $1,300; dryer $800 to $1,200; set $1,000 to $2,300 | Before installation |
Notice how tight the bottom of the market is. Entry-level washers now cluster around $500 to $700, so a “cheap” pair rarely drops much below $1,000 new unless you catch a holiday sale or buy open-box.
Why the washer earns the bigger share of the budget
Paying more for a washer buys things you can feel for a decade: gentler fabric care, better water extraction (which shortens drying time), quieter spin, larger capacity and, at the top, a longer parts-and-labor warranty. Speed Queen, for example, covers the TC5 washer and DC5 dryer for five years parts and labor, against the one year most mainstream brands include.
Paying more for a conventional vented dryer mostly buys features: steam cycles, Wi-Fi, a stainless drum, a larger window. Moisture sensors, the feature that actually saves energy and fabric, already appear on many mid-priced models. Angi puts typical dryer life at about 13 to 14 years, and a basic dryer has fewer parts to fail than a basic washer. That is why many repair techs and appliance forum regulars suggest pairing a strong washer with a plain dryer.
- Worth paying up for on the washer: capacity you will use, a high final spin speed, a stainless tub, a longer warranty, and a brand with parts available locally.
- Usually skippable on the dryer: steam, app control, extra specialty cycles and color-matched pedestals.
- Not skippable on the dryer: a moisture sensor and a size that fits the washer’s load. A 4.5 cu. ft. washer wants a dryer of roughly 7 cu. ft.
Divide by the years: three ways to spend $1,000 to $3,000
Hypothetical example for illustration. Prices come from the listings above; the service lives are assumptions chosen to show the math, not guarantees for any brand.
| Plan | Upfront | Assumed life | Cost per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matched budget pair (Amana) | $1,038 | 10 years | About $104 |
| Matched mid-range front-load pair (LG) | $2,000 | 11 years | About $182 |
| Split: Speed Queen TC5 washer + budget Amana dryer | $2,018 | Washer 18 years, dryer replaced once at year 12 (+$600) | About $146 |
| Matched Speed Queen pair | $2,998 | 18 years | About $167 |
Three lessons fall out of this. A budget pair is very hard to beat on raw dollars per year if it actually reaches a normal lifespan. A pricey front-load set is the worst deal of the four unless you value its features or need it to stack. And the split plan puts the money where wear happens, with a dryer cheap enough to replace without regret. One repair call, which commonly runs a few hundred dollars, changes the ranking quickly, which is why warranty length matters more than it looks on the shelf.
Front load or top load: you are buying floor space and water use
Front-loaders use less water, spin faster and can stack, which matters in a closet or condo. They also tend to cost more and need the door left open and the gasket wiped to avoid odor. High-efficiency top-loaders without an agitator sit in between. Traditional agitator top-loaders, the Amana and Speed Queen TC5 style, are simpler, quick and forgiving, but use more water. If the laundry space is a hallway closet, a stacked front-load pair or a single-unit tower is often the only real option, so price that first.
Gas or electric dryer: let the wall decide
Angi reports gas dryers usually cost $50 to $100 more than the electric version of the same model, and a plumber typically charges $75 to $125 to connect one to an existing gas stub. Gas is usually cheaper per load: Direct Energy estimates gas drying can run around a third of the cost of electric. As a rough illustration, an electric load using about 3.75 kWh costs about 64 cents at 17 cents per kWh.
The deciding cost is what is already behind the machine. If you have a gas line and no 240-volt outlet, buy gas. If you have a 240-volt dryer outlet and no gas, buy electric. Adding the missing utility erases years of savings: HomeGuide puts a new gas line at $150 to $1,000 and a 240-volt outlet at $250 to $800, or more if your electrical panel has no room.
All-in-one combos and heat pump dryers: paying to skip the vent
A ventless washer-dryer combo washes and dries in one drum and needs no duct to the outside. Reviewed lists the GE Profile at about $2,299, Samsung’s Bespoke AI combo at about $2,299 at major retailers ($3,299 at Samsung) and the LG WashCombo at about $2,199. The trade-off is time and capacity: Reviewed’s testers saw full wash-and-dry cycles of two to three hours on the LG, and heavy loads on all of them can need extra drying.
For a family doing a load a day, a combo usually loses to a stacked pair on throughput. For an apartment with no vent and no 240-volt outlet, it may be the only way to have laundry at home, and it beats a weekly trip to the laundromat.
The checkout screen: lines that get added after you pick the pair
| Add-on | Typical cost | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Install with existing hookups | $100 to $300 for both | Swapping old for new in the same spot |
| Haul-away of old units | $50 to $150 per appliance | Unless the retailer includes it |
| Stacking kit | $30 to $70 | Front-load pairs going vertical |
| New dryer vent run | $200 to $800 | Damaged, plastic or overly long ducts |
| Gas dryer hookup | $150 to $250 labor | Gas dryer replacement |
| New hookups in a new spot | $650 to $2,000 | Moving laundry upstairs or into a garage |
Before checkout, confirm three things that do not show in the price: whether new water fill hoses and an electric dryer power cord are included (many electric dryers ship without a cord because homes use either 3-prong or 4-prong outlets), whether delivery crews will take stairs, and whether haul-away requires the old units to be disconnected first.
Where washer and dryer prices are heading into 2027
- Steel tariffs are already in the price. Since June 23, 2025, the steel content of imported washers and dryers has carried the 50% Section 232 tariff, per a Commerce Department notice reported by Supply Chain Dive. A washer can contain as much as 100 pounds of steel.
- Brands raised prices again in 2026. Yale Appliance reported that several manufacturers, including GE, LG and Whirlpool, planned increases of 3.5% to 12% between June and August 2026.
- Shelf prices have been choppy, not runaway. BLS data for May 2026, as summarized by ApplianceNews, showed laundry equipment up only 0.3% from a year earlier, because frequent sales offset list-price hikes.
- New federal efficiency rules arrive in 2028. DOE standards for residential washers and dryers take effect March 1, 2028, with dryers expected to use about 11% less energy. Models redesigned for the rule may start appearing during 2027.
No manufacturer has announced 2027 price lists. Expect similar or slightly higher prices in 2027, with the best deals still landing around Black Friday, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.
A buying rule that fits most homes
- Measure the space and check the wall: gas or 240-volt, vent or no vent. That settles half the decision before you shop.
- If only one machine has died, replace only that one. A new washer next to a working dryer is fine.
- Spend first on the washer: capacity, spin and warranty. Then buy the simplest dryer with a moisture sensor that matches the drum size.
- Pay for matched looks or a stacked pair only when the space or your taste truly calls for it.
- Add $200 to $500 to the budget for installation, haul-away, hoses and a cord, more if the vent or outlet needs work.
Washer and dryer price questions
Is an extended warranty worth it on a washer and dryer set?
Often not on a simple, reliable model, since the plan can cost a meaningful share of the price. It can make more sense on feature-heavy front-loaders and combos with electronics. Check what the manufacturer already covers and whether your credit card extends warranties before buying one.
Is buying an open-box or scratch-and-dent washer dryer a good deal?
It can be. Cosmetic damage on the side of a machine that sits against a wall costs you nothing in use. Confirm the full manufacturer warranty still applies, that all parts and hoses are included, and what the return policy is.
Is it cheaper to rent a washer and dryer than buy?
Over a few years, usually not. Monthly rental and rent-to-own payments add up to more than a budget set within a couple of years. Renting can make sense for a short lease where you cannot move appliances in or out easily.
Can a new washer go next to an old dryer from a different brand?
Yes. Washers and dryers work independently, so mixing brands only affects looks. The exception is stacking, where the stacking kit is usually brand and model specific.
How much does it cost to fix a washer instead of replacing it?
Many common repairs, such as a pump, lid switch or door lock, run a few hundred dollars with labor. A common guideline is to replace instead of repair when the bill passes about half the price of a comparable new machine, or when the unit is near the end of its expected life.
