The finance manager turns the screen around and the number on it is $765. That is what the average new-car loan payment came to in the second quarter of 2026, according to Experian, and most buyers judge the whole deal by it. It is less than two-thirds of the bill. AAA’s latest Your Driving Costs study puts the full cost of owning and running a new vehicle at $12,863 a year, about $1,072 a month, once depreciation, insurance, fuel, maintenance and registration are counted alongside the loan interest.

That gap between the payment and the true monthly cost is what this guide is about. It brings together every car, RV and repair price we track, from a $35 oil change to a $99,990 pickup, and sorts them in the order the bills actually show up in an owner’s life: the day you buy, every month after, every few thousand miles, and the day something breaks. Figures are current prices for 2027 planning, and where something has officially changed for 2027 we say so.

If a warning light or a shop quote is what brought you here, our car repair cost estimator gives a fast price check before you read further.

Car costs at a glance: 15 prices in one table

Sort by the right-hand column first. A repair you can schedule is a budgeting problem; one that strands you is a cash-flow problem, and those are the bills that land on credit cards. Ranges summarize our individual guides, which link to the underlying sources.

Where $12,863 a year goes

AAA builds its estimate from 34 top-selling models, five years of ownership and 15,000 miles a year, with a sales-weighted average sticker of $39,376. Broken into its parts, the number explains most of what follows.

Cost categoryPer yearShare of total
Depreciation$4,42234%
Fuel (at $4.15 a gallon for regular)about $2,59820%
Full-coverage insurance$2,09816%
Maintenance, repairs and tiresabout $1,76014%
Finance charges$1,1849%
License, registration and taxes$8026%
Total$12,863100%

Two things stand out. Depreciation is the largest line and the only one that never appears on a bill; you pay it when you sell or trade in. And the costs owners spend the most time haggling over, oil changes and brake jobs, sit inside a maintenance line that is smaller than insurance. That does not make shop prices unimportant. It means the biggest savings usually come from what you buy and how you finance it, while maintenance savings come from not paying for work you do not need.

Vehicle type moves the total more than any single choice after purchase. AAA puts a gasoline medium sedan at $10,582 a year. A half-ton pickup costs about $1.10 a mile, 48 cents more than a small sedan, or roughly $7,191 a year more. Electric sedans came out about 29% more expensive per year than comparable gas sedans in this edition, mainly through depreciation and insurance, even though charging at home cost 66% to 70% less than gasoline per mile. AAA cautions that its 2026 methodology changed, so the total should not be compared directly with last year’s $11,577.

Day one: what vehicles actually sell for

New-vehicle prices crossed $50,000 in 2025 and have stayed there. Kelley Blue Book’s average transaction price was $50,562 in September 2026, up 0.7% from a year earlier, a far gentler climb than the tariff headlines of 2025 suggested. Averages hide a wide spread by segment.

Segment (KBB, September 2026)Average transaction price
Compact SUV or crossover$37,614
Industry average, all new vehicles$50,562
Luxury compact SUV$55,206
Luxury car$62,072
Full-size pickup$67,573

Used vehicles are no longer the easy escape they were a decade ago. Cox Automotive’s average used listing price hit $27,235 in September 2026, the highest monthly average since December 2022 and nearly 6% above a year earlier. The squeeze is sharpest at the bottom: vehicles under $15,000 made up just 15.7% of used inventory, down from 19.4% a year before. Demand has shifted toward younger cars: Cox reports sales of vehicles under three years old running noticeably ahead of last year, and certified pre-owned sales were up 10%.

Some buyers are not shopping the average at all. The Tesla Cybertruck lineup runs $74,990 to $99,990 before fees, roughly $83,000 out the door for the base truck, and the useful question becomes what each $10,000 to $15,000 trim step adds. The new Tesla Roadster has no published price yet; Tesla takes a $50,000 reservation, and any final figure of $200,000 to $300,000 is a scenario rather than a quote. Treat a deposit on an unpriced car as a refundable bet, and read the refund terms before paying.

Every month: loan, insurance and fuel

Three bills arrive every month whether the car moves or not, and together they are where most household car budgets break.

The loan

Experian’s second-quarter 2026 figures show new-car borrowers financing an average of $43,610 at 6.35% APR for about 69.5 months, with a $765 monthly payment. Used-car borrowers financed $27,852 at 11.19% for about 68 months, paying roughly $540 a month. The rate gap matters more than it looks. A used borrower pays nearly twice the new-car rate on every dollar, so on a used purchase a preapproval from a bank or credit union is worth getting before you set foot on the lot.

Long terms are the quiet risk. A 72- or 84-month loan lowers the payment but keeps you owing more than the car is worth for years, which turns an accident or an early trade-in into a bill. A sensible test: if the only way the payment fits is a seven-year term, the car is too expensive.

Insurance

Full coverage averaged $2,237 a year in Insurify’s mid-2026 report, with a projected $2,242 by year-end, essentially flat. The national figure hides huge state gaps: Washington, D.C., averaged $3,880, Maryland $3,646, Rhode Island $3,611, Michigan $3,229 and Georgia $3,109. Rates fell in 2025 and the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ insurance index was still down 5.1% year over year in August 2026, but Insurify expects increases in 32 states by the end of 2026, so the relief may be short.

Motor vehicle maintenance and repair prices rose 5.2% in the 12 months to August 2026, while car insurance prices fell 5.1%.

Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index

Fuel

AAA’s study assumed regular gasoline at $4.152 a gallon, up nearly 32% from its prior edition, which works out to about 17 cents a mile. Home charging at 18 cents per kilowatt-hour cost 66% to 70% less per mile than gas across the vehicle classes AAA studied. If you drive more than average or pay high gas prices, that gap is the strongest financial argument for an EV or a hybrid; AAA found hybrids cheaper to own than gas versions in four of the classes it compared.

Every few thousand miles: the maintenance calendar

Routine service is the part of car ownership where small prices add up, and where upselling is most common. The rule that saves the most money is simple: follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual, not the sticker on the windshield or the menu at the service counter.

Start with oil. Our oil change cost guide puts conventional changes at $35 to $75 and full synthetic at $65 to $130, and shows why the interval matters more than the price per visit: a $90 synthetic change every 10,000 miles costs less per year than a $45 change every 3,000. Quick-lube chains add their own pricing quirks. Our Take 5 oil change price breakdown lists $45 to $60 for the entry tier and $80 to $125 for synthetic, before extra quarts and add-ons, so it pays to know your engine’s oil capacity before you pull in.

Alignment is the next most common line. A four-wheel alignment runs about $100 to $200, a front-only job $70 to $130, and lifetime plans $180 to $240, which only pay off if you keep the car several more years. Uneven tire wear is often blamed on alignment when the real cause is tire pressure or a worn tire, so rule those out first.

Fluids are where shops most often sell work too early. A full brake fluid change costs about $100 to $200, and the right trigger is the manufacturer’s interval or a moisture test, not a pitch bundled with an oil change. Our guide tests six common myths, including the idea that a “flush” and a “bleed” are always the same job.

Transmission fluid is a frequent upsell too. Our transmission fluid change vs flush guide puts a basic change at about $150 to $356 and a flush at $165 to $290. It also explains why high-mileage cars with no service history should skip the pressure flush.

A sample maintenance year for a five-year-old sedan (illustrative)

Two synthetic oil changes at about $90 each ($180), one tire rotation often included with the oil change, one four-wheel alignment with new tires ($150), and a brake fluid change if the manual calls for it at that age ($150). That is roughly $480 before tires or brakes, well under AAA’s $1,760 maintenance, repair and tire line, which also covers the repairs and tire replacements in the next section.

The day something breaks: repair prices

Repairs are lumpier than maintenance, and the pattern across our guides is consistent: the price swings far more with diagnosis and where the part sits than with the part itself. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ maintenance and repair index was up 5.2% in the year to August 2026, and up about 45% over five years by Insurify’s count, so older quotes understate what shops charge now.

Brakes

Most drivers replace pads several times over a car’s life. Our brake pad and rotor replacement guide prices pads alone at $150 to $450 per axle and pads with new rotors at $300 to $850. Rotor thickness, measured against the minimum stamped on the rotor, decides which bill you get, so ask for the measurement rather than accepting “rotors are due” on faith.

Starting and charging

A car that will not start is usually one of two parts. A car battery replacement costs about $120 to $350 installed, and AGM batteries used in many newer cars with start-stop systems run $250 to $450; the same battery can vary by $300 depending on who sells and installs it. An alternator replacement runs $400 to $900 at most shops and over $2,500 on some luxury SUVs where the alternator is buried deep in the engine bay. Most parts stores test both for free, and a free test before either purchase is the cheapest step on this page.

For anything else on the dashboard, from a check-engine light to a noise you cannot place, the car repair cost estimator gives a range to compare with a shop quote.

EVs, RVs and golf carts: vehicles with their own math

Our cars, RVs and other vehicles coverage is about purchases that do not fit the average-sedan model, where the sticker can mislead in either direction.

Electric vehicles trade low running costs for higher depreciation and insurance, and one large but rare risk: the battery pack. Our Tesla battery replacement guide puts an out-of-warranty pack at $12,000 to $18,000 for a Model 3 or Y and $22,000 or more for a Model S or X. Tesla covers its packs for 8 years, with mileage limits of 100,000 to 150,000 miles depending on the model, so most first owners never pay this bill. For a used EV buyer, the remaining battery warranty is worth more than almost any option package.

Golf carts look cheap until you price them over a decade. A new golf cart lists for about $10,000 to $16,000 and a used one $4,000 to $9,000, but out-the-door fees and the battery choice between lead-acid and lithium decide the eight-year cost, since lead-acid packs need replacing far sooner.

RVs are often a rental before they are a purchase. An RV rental averages about $93 to $343 a night depending on class, yet mileage fees, fuel and campsites can double that; a sample seven-night Class C trip in our guide totals about $3,200. Renting two or three times before buying is the cheapest way to learn which class you would actually use.

Boats follow the same rent-first logic. Our guide to the cost to rent a boat for the day prices everything from a $110 kayak to a crewed yacht, and shows why a pontoon is usually the best value per seat.

Six habits that quietly double ownership costs

Across a dozen car price guides, the same errors show up whether the purchase is a $45 oil change or a $75,000 truck.

  1. Shopping by monthly payment. A lower payment on a longer loan usually means more total interest and years of owing more than the car is worth. Negotiate the out-the-door price first, then the financing.
  2. Ignoring depreciation because it never sends a bill. At $4,422 a year in AAA’s study, it is the largest single cost of a new car. Buying two or three years old lets the first owner absorb the steepest part.
  3. Buying maintenance from the service menu instead of the manual. Early fluid flushes and 3,000-mile oil changes on cars built for 7,500 to 10,000 miles are among the most common upsells in our repair guides.
  4. Replacing parts before testing them. Batteries and alternators are routinely swapped for each other. Free parts-store tests and a rotor measurement cost nothing and settle the question.
  5. Never re-shopping insurance. With premiums ranging from about $2,000 to nearly $3,900 by state and rates shifting again in 2026, comparing quotes at every renewal is worth the hour.
  6. Pricing the vehicle, not the use. A pickup, an RV or a golf cart can be the right purchase, but each carries running costs (fuel, storage, batteries, campsites) that the sticker does not show.

What changes for car owners in 2027

No one publishes 2027 prices for a brake job or an alignment, so the ranges here are current prices for 2027 planning. The direction is clearer than the dollar figures. Repair prices are still climbing about 5% a year, new-car prices have flattened just above $50,000, used prices are firm at the low end, and insurance looks set to stop falling after a year of relief.

One federal rule is fixed for 2027. The 2025 tax law created a deduction for interest on loans for new personal vehicles that had final assembly in the United States, for tax years 2025 through 2028. Owners can deduct up to $10,000 of loan interest a year without itemizing, but the deduction phases out starting at $100,000 of modified adjusted gross income for single filers and $200,000 for joint filers. Used cars, leases and imported models do not qualify, so check a specific vehicle’s assembly plant before counting on it, and confirm your situation with a tax professional or the IRS.

Questions owners ask

How much does it cost to own a car per month?

AAA’s 2026 Your Driving Costs study puts the average new vehicle at $12,863 a year, or about $1,072 a month, including depreciation, insurance, fuel, maintenance, loan interest and registration. A paid-off older car can cost far less each month, mainly because depreciation and finance charges shrink.

Is it cheaper to own an electric car or a gas car?

It depends on how long you keep it and how much you drive. In AAA’s 2026 study, charging at home cost 66% to 70% less per mile than gasoline, but electric sedans still cost about 29% more per year overall than comparable gas sedans over five years, mostly because of higher depreciation and insurance. Hybrids came out cheaper than gas models in four of the classes AAA compared.

How much should I budget each year for car repairs?

AAA’s study allots about $1,760 a year for maintenance, repairs and tires on a new vehicle driven 15,000 miles. Older cars out of warranty typically need more. Setting aside $100 to $150 a month in a separate account keeps a battery, alternator or brake job off a credit card.

Can I deduct car loan interest on my taxes in 2027?

Possibly. For tax years 2025 through 2028, interest on a loan for a new personal-use vehicle with final assembly in the United States can be deducted up to $10,000 a year, without itemizing. The deduction phases out above $100,000 of modified adjusted gross income for single filers and $200,000 for joint filers. Used vehicles and leases do not qualify. Confirm eligibility with a tax professional or IRS guidance.

Which states have the most expensive car insurance?

In Insurify’s mid-2026 data, Washington, D.C., averaged $3,880 a year for full coverage, followed by Maryland at $3,646, Rhode Island at $3,611, Michigan at $3,229 and Georgia at $3,109. The national average was about $2,237.

Is it better to buy new or used in 2027?

Used vehicles avoid the steepest depreciation, but the average used listing reached $27,235 in September 2026 and used-car loans averaged 11.19% APR versus 6.35% for new. For buyers with strong credit, a two- or three-year-old car often balances both, while promotional new-car financing can narrow the gap. Compare total cost over the years you plan to keep the car, not the sticker.

A one-page plan for the next car you own

If you remember nothing else, budget the car the way AAA does, as a yearly total rather than a payment. Price the out-the-door figure before discussing financing. Re-shop insurance at every renewal. Follow the owner’s manual for maintenance and test before you replace. And set aside a repair fund sized to the age of the car, because the bills that hurt are the ones that arrive without warning.

Tools that help: the car repair cost estimator for shop quotes, and, if you are moving a car across the country, the moving cost calculator covers car shipping.

Pricing method: prices were researched in November 2026 for 2027 planning and may change.
