On Jackson Lake in Grand Teton National Park, $110 rents a one-person sea kayak for the day and $649 rents a pontoon that seats ten. Across the country, the cost to rent a boat for the day falls into a fairly tight band for most families: 2026 price guides put a self-drive pontoon or bowrider at roughly $350 to $900 for a full day, a jet ski at about $350 to $500, and a crewed yacht at $3,000 and up. Fuel, fees and a deposit hold come on top.
The more useful number is the price per seat. Divide the day rate by the people it carries and the ladder looks very different from the sticker prices. The middle rungs, pontoons and deck boats, give a group the most water time per dollar. Above them, each extra thousand buys comfort and a crew, not more lake.
Seven rungs, from a $110 kayak to a crewed yacht
These are full-day prices from named marinas and from Boatzon’s 2026 rental guide and Powersports Guide’s survey of jet ski shops. The per-seat column simply divides a representative day rate by the boat’s capacity, so treat it as a yardstick, not a quote.
| Rung | Typical full day | Example | Rough cost per seat |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Kayak or small fishing boat | $110 to $350 | Signal Mountain Lodge fishing boat, 5 people: $285 | $57 |
| 2. Jet ski | $350 to $500 | Panama City Beach, 8 hours: $349 plus tax | $175 |
| 3. Pontoon or deck boat | $350 to $800 | Lake Powell 23-ft pontoon, 12 people: $479 to $599 | $40 to $50 |
| 4. Bowrider or runabout | $400 to $900 | Lake Powell 19-ft powerboat, 8 people: $379 to $459 | $47 to $57 |
| 5. Center console or sailboat | $400 to $1,100 | Boatzon range for fishing center consoles: $500 to $1,100 | $80 to $180 |
| 6. Captained party boat | $1,200 to $3,000 | Boatzon range, captain included | $100 to $250 |
| 7. Luxury yacht, 50 to 80 ft | $3,000 to $10,000+ | Crew usually included; fuel, food and drinks often not | $250 and up |
Rung 1: Paddles and tiller boats, the cheapest hours on any lake
At Signal Mountain Lodge, the concession on Jackson Lake, the 2026 season sheet lists a single sea kayak at $29 an hour or $110 for the day and a tandem at $125. A five-person fishing boat is $60 an hour, capped at $285 a day plus tax, and those boats go first come, first served.
This rung is the bargain for two to four people who want quiet water, fishing or a shoreline picnic. The limits are range and weather: a small outboard boat on a big lake turns choppy afternoons into a wet, slow ride back. If your plan involves crossing open water or pulling a tube, you are shopping on a higher rung.
Rung 2: Jet skis cost the most per seat on the lower half of the ladder
Personal watercraft look cheap on a sign because shops quote them by the hour. Powersports Guide’s survey of rental shops found most charge $75 to $100 an hour and $350 to $500 for a full day. A few real price boards from that survey:
- Beachy Jet Skis, Panama City Beach: $99 for one hour, $249 for four, $349 for eight, plus tax
- Mission Bay Sportcenter, San Diego: $95 an hour, $500 all day
- Rocky River Adventure Rental, Laughlin, Nevada: $119 an hour, $429 for a full day
- All Island Watersports, Fort Myers: $110 an hour, $600 for a full day
A jet ski carries two people at most, so even the $349 Florida day works out to about $175 a seat. That is more per person than a pontoon at a national park marina. Jet skis earn their price in thrills, not value. For a group of six, two jet skis for two hours plus a pontoon for the day usually beats three jet skis for the day.
Rung 3: Pontoons and deck boats, where the value peaks
Boatzon’s 2026 guide puts a 20- to 24-foot pontoon at $200 to $450 for a half day and $350 to $800 for a full day. Lake Powell’s concessioner publishes its 2026 rates by season, which shows how much timing alone moves the price on the same boat.
| Lake Powell rental, per day | Low season | Shoulder | Peak (June 13 to Aug. 23) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19-ft powerboat, seats 8 | $379 | $429 | $459 |
| 21-ft powerboat, seats 10 | $479 | $559 | $599 |
| 23-ft pontoon, seats 12 | $479 | $559 | $599 |
| 21-ft deck boat, seats 12 | $529 | $609 | $649 |
Twelve people on a $599 peak-season pontoon pay about $50 each. Book the same boat in September and it falls to $559, or $479 in spring. Pontoons are slow and wallow in chop, but for swimming, sightseeing and a cooler full of lunch, nothing on the water carries more people for less.
Rung 4: Bowriders and runabouts buy speed, not space
A bowrider costs about the same as a pontoon (Boatzon lists $400 to $900 a day) but seats fewer people and moves faster. At Signal Mountain, a five-seat runabout is $74 an hour or $349 a day, while the ten-seat pontoon is $649. Gas and oil are extra on both.
Pay for this rung when distance matters: a big lake where the good coves are 15 miles out, or a crowd that wants to ski or tube. Check the towing rule first. Signal Mountain bans towing behind any rental, and plenty of marinas restrict it or charge extra for gear. Boatzon puts water toys at $25 to $100 each.
Rung 5: Center consoles and sailboats, priced for a purpose
Boatzon’s 2026 figures put a fishing center console at $500 to $1,100 a day and a 25- to 40-foot sailboat at $400 to $900. Neither is a better family boat than a pontoon. A center console earns its premium offshore, where a deep hull and a bigger engine matter; a sailboat only makes sense if someone aboard can sail it, or if you hire a skipper. Twin-engine boats also burn more: Boatzon budgets $200 to $500 in fuel for a day on one, against $40 to $100 for a pontoon.
Rung 6: Hiring a captain, the jump most people underestimate
Adding a captain changes the math more than any step on the ladder. Boatzon lists a captain at $50 to $75 an hour or about $300 to $500 a day, plus a customary 15 to 20 percent tip. Captained party boats run $1,200 to $3,000 a day, and captained yachts of 40 to 60 feet charge $250 to $600 an hour, usually with a three- or four-hour minimum. A full-day offshore fishing charter runs $1,200 to $2,500.
A captain can still be the smart buy. Unfamiliar water, inlets and tides, a group with no one comfortable docking, or a destination where rental rules require one are all good reasons. It is the right call when the alternative is a nervous driver and a damage claim.
Rung 7: Yachts, where the value stops improving
A 50- to 80-foot yacht runs $3,000 to $10,000 or more for a day, and larger luxury yachts can reach $15,000. Crew is usually included; fuel, food and drinks often are not. On multi-day charters, an advance provisioning allowance of 25 to 35 percent of the base fee covers fuel, food and port charges. Per seat, you pay five times what a pontoon costs for a nicer place to sit on the same water. That can be worth it for a wedding party or a milestone birthday. It is rarely worth it just to see the lake.
The charges that follow you up every rung
Boatzon estimates that add-ons can push a rental 20 to 40 percent above the listed rate. The usual suspects:
- Platform service fees. Getmyboat adds a 13 percent service fee to bookings in U.S. dollars, nonrefundable except in extenuating circumstances. Boatsetter charges its own renter service fee and a renter insurance fee that varies by boat and trip length.
- Deposit holds. Boatsetter’s fee policy calls for a security deposit hold of at least $500 on your card, and owners may set more. Getmyboat lists a security allowance that is charged only if the owner files a valid claim within 48 hours. Marinas typically hold $250 to $1,500. At Lake Powell, renters choose a refundable damage deposit or a paid damage waiver at check-in.
- Fuel. Usually billed separately: return it full, pay a flat fee or pay by the gallon used. Boatsetter adds a $30 administrative fee when a renter ignores the owner’s fuel policy.
- Late returns. On Boatsetter, a late return costs a $30 fee plus prorated time at the hourly rate.
- Cleaning and tips. Boatzon lists cleaning fees of $50 to $150. For a self-drive boat, nobody expects a tip; for a captained charter, plan on 10 to 20 percent.
- A boater card. In Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 needs a Boating Safety Education ID Card or a temporary certificate to operate. The rental exam costs $3, and the certificate is good for 90 days. Other states have their own rules, so ask the marina what it accepts.
For 2027, no marina or platform cited here had posted new rates by November 2026. Lake Powell’s published schedule covers the 2026 season, and peer-to-peer owners reset prices whenever they like. Plan with these numbers, and confirm when booking.
When renting by the day stops making sense
Boat clubs sell the whole ladder as a subscription. Freedom Boat Club, the largest, doesn’t publish prices; it quotes each market separately. ThePricer’s roundup of member-reported quotes, updated November 2025, puts the one-time entry fee at $3,000 to $7,000 and monthly dues at about $350 to $500, with fuel billed on top.
Here is a hypothetical example using those figures. One reported quote was $3,999 to join and $425 a month, or $9,099 for the first year. At $600 a day for a pontoon, that buys about 15 rental days. A family that boats six weekends a summer spends about $3,600 renting and comes out far ahead. A family on the water every weekend from May to September, around 20 days, starts to make the club look reasonable from the second year, when the entry fee is gone and the cost falls to about $5,100.
Day boat rental questions the rate card won’t answer
How much does it cost to rent a boat for just a few hours?
Many marinas rent by the hour, often with a two-hour minimum. Signal Mountain Lodge on Jackson Lake charges $74 an hour for a runabout and $140 for a pontoon, and Boatzon’s 2026 guide puts a basic self-drive boat at $75 to $150 an hour. Half-day rates are usually cheaper per hour than hourly ones.
Does my car or homeowners insurance cover a rented boat?
Do not assume it does. Policies differ widely on watercraft, and many limit or exclude boats by size or horsepower. Peer-to-peer platforms such as Boatsetter build a renter insurance fee into the booking, and marinas offer damage waivers. Call your insurer and read the rental agreement before you decline coverage.
How old do you have to be to rent a boat?
Each rental company sets its own minimum age, and state boating laws add rules on who may operate. Florida’s temporary rental certificate, for example, is only for renters 18 and older. Ask the marina for its age rule and any education card requirement before you book.
What happens to my booking if the weather turns bad?
It depends on the cancellation policy attached to the listing or the marina’s terms. On peer-to-peer platforms, owners choose from set policies, and the platform service fee may not be refunded. Read the weather clause before paying, and ask who makes the call to cancel.
Is it cheaper to rent a boat outside summer?
Usually, at seasonal lakes. Lake Powell’s 2026 rate sheet charges $599 a day for a 23-foot pontoon in peak season, $559 in shoulder season and $479 in low season. In warm-weather markets like Florida, demand around holidays and spring break matters more than the month.
Five things to get in writing before you hand over a card
- The all-in total: day rate, service fee, insurance or waiver, tax and any captain fee.
- The fuel policy, and what you pay if you return it short.
- The deposit or hold amount, and how many days until it is released.
- Whether towing, tubing and pets are allowed, and what gear costs.
- The weather and cancellation terms, including whether fees are refunded.
If the boat is for a group of six or more and the water is calm, start your search on rung three. Move up only for distance, rough water or a crew, and move down only if you are two people who would rather paddle.
