Two limo companies can both quote “$175 an hour” for the same Saturday night and send bills hundreds of dollars apart. One counts the clock from your curb, includes the tip and charges nothing for fuel. The other starts billing when the car leaves its garage across town, adds 20% gratuity, a fuel surcharge and every toll, then rounds overtime up to the next quarter hour.
For 2027 planning, published rates put a stretch limo at roughly $125 to $250 an hour, with a three- or four-hour minimum on most weekend bookings. That makes the base charge about $500 to $1,000 before anything else is added, and the sample eight-person night below lands near $1,000 all in. The hourly rate is only the first line of the invoice, so this guide prices every line after it.
Short answer: a sedan or SUV runs about $120 to $175 an hour, a stretch limo $125 to $250, and a party bus $225 to $400 or more, based on 2026 rate pages from Chicago and New York operators. Multiply by the minimum (usually 3 to 6 hours), then add 15% to 20% if gratuity is not already in the rate.
A sample bill: one stretch limo, eight passengers, one Saturday
The invoice below is a hypothetical example built from published rates and terms, not a real customer’s bill. It assumes an eight-passenger stretch limo at $175 an hour, a four-hour minimum, a company that adds gratuity and a fuel surcharge, and a night that runs 30 minutes long.
| Line on the invoice | Example amount | Fair, padding or it depends? |
|---|---|---|
| Base: 4-hour minimum at $175/hour | $700.00 | Fair if the minimum was disclosed in writing |
| Gratuity at 20% of base | $140.00 | Fair once; padding if you also tip in cash because no one told you |
| Fuel surcharge at 10% | $70.00 | It depends: many operators charge none |
| Tolls and parking, at cost | $25.00 | Fair with receipts |
| Overtime: 30 minutes, two 15-minute blocks | $87.50 | Fair if you asked the driver to stay |
| Peak-date surcharge | $0 in this example | Ask: some companies add one on Saturdays and holidays |
| Total | $1,022.50 | About $128 per person |
Notice that the advertised rate accounts for about 68% of the total. The other third is where two quotes that look identical stop being identical.
Line one: the hourly rate, and why the vehicle matters more than the city
Seating is the biggest single driver of the rate. A larger vehicle costs more per hour but less per seat, which is why a group of 18 often pays less per person in a party bus than a group of eight in a stretch.
| Vehicle | Seats | Published hourly rate | Typical minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury sedan | 3 | $120 to $150 (Chicago); $120 all-in (New York) | 3 to 4 hours |
| Luxury SUV | 6 | $140 to $175 (Chicago); $150 all-in (New York) | 3 to 4 hours |
| Stretch limo | 6 to 14 | $125 to $175 (New York); $175 to $250 (Chicago) | 2 to 6 hours |
| Sprinter van | up to 14 | from $150 (Chicago) | 3 to 4 hours |
| Party bus | 15 to 50+ | $225 to $400+ (Chicago) | 4 to 6 hours |
Smaller markets can be cheaper. Contract rate sheets filed with the University of Virginia show a Charlottesville operator’s maximum hourly rates for 2025 at $78.75 for a sedan and $114.45 for an SUV, and another listed $64 and $94. Those are institutional contract rates for business travel, not a stretch limo on prom night, but they show how much of a big-city quote is big-city overhead. The Knot, for its part, puts town car and wedding limo rates at $75 to $150 an hour, and $200 to $300 for larger vehicles.
Color matters too. The Knot notes that black and silver cars are usually cheaper than white ones during wedding season, because white is what every couple wants on the same June Saturday.
Line two: the minimum, where low hourly rates hide
A $132-an-hour stretch with a two-hour minimum and a $175 stretch with a four-hour minimum are not comparable, even though the first one sounds cheaper. Gotham Limousine in New York, for example, lists a 6-to-8-passenger stretch at $132 an hour with a two-hour minimum Monday through Thursday and three hours Friday through Sunday. Chicago’s Royal Carriage sets stretch minimums at four to six hours and party bus minimums at four.
Then ask when the clock starts. Hourly limo service is usually billed garage to garage, meaning from the moment the car leaves the company’s lot until it returns, not just the time you spend inside it. Limos.com describes hourly service that way, and Gotham’s rates are round-trip garage to garage. If the garage is 40 minutes from your house, you pay for 80 minutes of a car with nobody in it. A point-to-point flat rate avoids that, and it is the better buy for a single ride to a ceremony or an airport.
This is also the line behind the worst disputes. In a 2019 WSVN 7News investigation, a South Florida father quoted $250 an hour for a one-hour birthday ride said he was billed about $700 more for nearly two hours of the driver’s travel time to and from his house.
Line three: gratuity, included, suggested or charged twice
The customary limo tip is 15% to 20% of the base, according to both The Knot and Limos.com. The trouble is that companies handle it in at least four ways:
- Built into the rate. Detailed Drivers quotes all-in hourly rates with gratuity included; a New York stretch operator it cites, LimoServicesNYC, includes chauffeur, fuel and standard gratuity in its $125 to $175 range.
- Added to the invoice. One Midwest operator’s terms spell it out as base rate plus 20% gratuity plus applicable fees.
- Suggested and adjustable. A Virginia company’s 2026 terms include a 15% suggested tip in quotes that the customer can change up to 48 hours after the trip.
- Left to you, maybe. Royal Carriage’s September 2026 terms say it never charges or adds a gratuity, while its Chicago rate guide describes quotes as including a standard chauffeur gratuity. If one company’s own pages disagree, the only answer that counts is the one on your contract.
On a $700 base, an accidental double tip is $105 to $140 of pure waste. Ask the question in writing, and if gratuity is included, a small cash tip for a driver who handled a long night well is a kindness, not an obligation.
Lines four and five: fuel surcharges, tolls and parking
Fuel surcharges are the most inconsistent line in the industry. One Charlottesville operator’s University of Virginia rate filing lists a 10% fuel surcharge on charter receipts; another company there adds one only when Virginia’s average regular gas price passes $3.25 a gallon. Many big-city operators, including the Chicago and New York examples above, fold fuel into the hourly rate. If a quote mentions a surcharge, ask for the percentage and the trigger.
Tolls and parking are normally passed through at cost and billed after the trip. That is fair, provided you get receipts. Venue and airport access fees are handled the same way. Weddings add one more cost outside the limo contract: The Knot estimates parking attendants at $20 to $25 each, with about five per 100 guests.
Line six: overtime and waiting, billed by the quarter hour
Most operators bill extra time in 15-minute blocks at the hourly rate, so 16 minutes late costs the same as 30. Royal Carriage, a Virginia operator and Limos.com all describe 15-minute increments; LimoServicesNYC uses 30-minute blocks. Waiting before pickup is a separate meter. Royal Carriage’s terms give a 15-minute grace period, then $2 a minute for a stretch, Sprinter or party bus. Ten minutes of a slow getting-ready session costs $20; half an hour is $60.
Extra stops can also cost money on flat-rate trips. Royal Carriage charges $40 per unscheduled stop on airport and point-to-point transfers but nothing extra on hourly bookings, and a Midwest operator charges $25 for each on-route stop.
The lines that appear after the car is back in the garage
Cleaning and damage fees are where a $1,000 night becomes a $1,500 one. Published terms from three operators show how steep they are:
| Charge | Published amount |
|---|---|
| Vomit or other biohazard cleanup | $250 minimum (Virginia and Midwest operators); $350 to $650 plus lost rental time (Royal Carriage) |
| Smoking in a stretch or party bus | $450 (Royal Carriage); $250 minimum elsewhere |
| Vaping | $100 (Royal Carriage) |
| Seat burn | $150 per burn (Midwest operator) |
| Deep cleaning or detailing | $150 to $350 (Royal Carriage) |
These fees are legitimate when the mess is real, and disputed often enough that you should protect yourself. Take a few photos of the interior when you get in and when you get out. Pay with a credit card, not a debit card, so you can dispute a charge you do not recognize. In a CBS13 Sacramento report, one group charged $500 for vomit they denied won their dispute through their bank. And read the contract for clauses that punish complaints: the WSVN investigation found a contract authorizing a $585 administration charge if the customer disputed or asked about a charge, a term an attorney in the report called potentially unconscionable.
Prom, weddings and New Year’s Eve: same car, different math
Demand peaks from March through late June, when prom and graduation overlap with wedding season, and again on New Year’s Eve. Expect longer minimums, stricter cancellation terms and full payment upfront on those dates rather than a big jump in the hourly rate. Royal Carriage, for example, takes a 40% deposit on smaller vehicles but full payment at booking for weddings and anything larger than an SUV, with no refund inside seven days.
For prom, splitting the bill is what makes a limo work. Royal Carriage’s own 2026 math puts a $205-an-hour stretch at $820 for four hours before fees, about $103 per student for eight. A 34-passenger party bus at $330 an hour runs $1,320, about $73 each for 18 students.
Couples spent an average of $1,075 on wedding transportation, from $755 in the Southwest to $1,500 in the Northeast.
The Knot Real Weddings Study, 2024 weddings
Weddings rarely need a limo for the whole night. Booking a sedan or SUV for the couple’s exit and a shuttle for guests often beats one stretch idling through a five-hour reception. No national limo association or major operator has announced industry-wide 2027 rate changes; prices are set company by company, so the 2026 rate pages above are the best guide to what you will be quoted next year.
Limo questions that come up after the deposit
Is a limo cheaper than Uber for a group night out?
Sometimes. Royal Carriage estimates rideshare at $60 to $80 round trip per person on a busy Saturday night with surge pricing, while a shared stretch limo or party bus can come in near that per person for four hours with the car waiting at every stop. For two or three people, an Uber estimate usually wins.
How far ahead should I book a limo for prom or a wedding?
The Knot suggests five or six months ahead for wedding season. Royal Carriage advises two to three months for Chicago-area proms. Popular dates and white cars go first, so book earlier if the date is fixed.
Can we bring alcohol in a limo rental?
It depends on state law and the company. Some operators allow BYOB only when every passenger is 21 or older, and none should allow alcohol on a prom booking with underage riders. Ask the company and check your state’s open-container rules before you pack a cooler.
How do I check that a limo company is licensed?
Ask for its state or local operating permit and proof of commercial insurance. In many states the public utilities commission or a city or county transportation office registers limousine companies, and the WSVN investigation found operators that local regulators said were not properly registered. Larger buses that cross state lines also need a USDOT number.
What happens if the limo arrives late?
Read the contract before the event. Some companies offer credits for their own delays; one Midwest operator’s terms give a 25% discount for a 20 to 40 minute delay and up to 75% past an hour. Others promise nothing, so ask for the policy in writing.

The one number to get before you pay a deposit
Ignore the hourly rate until you have the all-in total in writing: base for the full minimum, garage-to-garage or not, gratuity included or not, fuel surcharge as a percentage, the overtime increment and the cleaning fee schedule. Get that figure from two companies and the cheaper one is usually obvious. If a company will not give it to you before taking a deposit, that refusal is the most useful price information you will get.
Pricing method: prices were researched in November 2026 for 2027 planning and may change. Hourly rates come from operator rate pages and terms published in 2026 (Royal Carriage Limousine, Detailed Drivers and the New York operators it cites, and operators’ posted terms in Virginia and the Midwest), University of Virginia contract rate filings for 2024 and 2025, The Knot’s Real Weddings Study, and news reports from WSVN 7News (2019) and CBS13 Sacramento (2012). The sample bill is a hypothetical example. Rates vary by company, city and date, so confirm every line with the operator. See our disclaimer.
