How much is a twin mattress: a new white twin mattress on a light wood platform bed in a bright child's bedroom

Two families stand in the same mattress aisle in August. One is moving a five-year-old out of a toddler bed; the other is packing a college freshman for a dorm. Both say “twin,” and only one of them should be buying a mattress at all. For the five-year-old, a sound twin costs about $90 to $600 at current prices, from IKEA’s $89 firm foam model to kids’ beds from Casper and Helix that sold for $499 and $599 in early November sales. The freshman most likely needs twin XL sheets, because the dorm already supplies the mattress.

That is the pattern with twins: the right price depends less on the mattress than on who sleeps on it and what it sits in. A top bunk, a trundle, a guest daybed and a tall adult’s everyday bed all call for different twins, and overspending on the wrong one is easy. Find your sleeper below, then jump to that section.

Short answer for 2027 planning: budget $90 to $200 for a bunk, trundle or occasional guest bed; $200 to $600 for a growing child; $600 to $1,000 for an adult who sleeps on it nightly. Add $18 to $22.50 if you live in California, Connecticut, Oregon or Rhode Island, where a state mattress recycling fee is charged at checkout.

Match the sleeper to the mattress

Each row below draws on prices we found in fall 2026 at brand sites, IKEA and Walmart, and in early-November sale roundups. The last column is the most useful one: the point where more money stops buying a better night for that sleeper.

Ranges are editorial groupings of current retail prices, not quotes. Your price depends on sales timing and state fees.

The child graduating from a toddler bed

This is the most common twin purchase, and the one where marketing works hardest. Kids are light, they rarely complain about pressure points, and they will outgrow the room long before they outgrow good support. What they do need is a surface firm enough to stay flat and a cover that survives spills.

At the low end, IKEA lists the ÅGOTNES firm foam twin at $89 and the ÅSVANG medium-firm foam twin at $129; the VANNAREID pocket-spring twin is $179. Walmart showed the 8-inch Zinus Spa Sensations Serenity memory foam twin at $120 (down from $148), though the twin was out of stock when we checked. Those are fine choices for a five-year-old, especially paired with a good protector.

The kids’-specific lines cost more. In Tom’s Guide’s November 2 sale roundup, the Casper Snug twin was $499 (from $599) and the Helix Kids twin $599 (from $749). Saatva’s Youth mattress, a flippable innerspring with a firmer side for younger children, has listed around $895 to $1,089 in twin this year depending on when it was checked. These beds are well made, but a seven-year-old is a light sleeper on a narrow bed, and the gap between a $179 spring mattress and a $599 kids’ hybrid matters far less to them than it would to an adult.

Where the money is better spent: a waterproof protector from day one, and a mattress you can replace without guilt. The Better Sleep Council, the mattress industry’s consumer group, says a mattress around seven years old has generally reached the end of its useful life. A twin bought at age five comes due around age twelve, right when a growing preteen may want a full anyway.

Top bunk: the safety rule that caps your budget

Bunk beds flip the usual logic. The thick, plush mattress that would be an upgrade anywhere else is a hazard on a top bunk, because it raises the sleeper toward the top of the guardrail.

The federal bunk bed standard, 16 CFR 1213, requires the upper edge of the guardrails to sit at least 5 inches above the top of the mattress when the bed holds a mattress of the maximum thickness the manufacturer specifies. That makes the manufacturer’s maximum the number that matters. Find it in the assembly manual or on the bed’s warning label before you shop, and treat it as a hard ceiling, not a suggestion.

The upside is cost. The thin foam and basic spring mattresses that fit most bunk limits are the cheapest twins sold, so two bunk mattresses from IKEA’s $89 to $179 range can cost less than one kids’ hybrid. Measure the bottom bunk too: some twin-over-full bunks take a full mattress on the lower level, which changes the size you need.

Headed to a dorm: the twin you probably should not buy

Every August, parents buy mattresses that end up in a basement. College housing nearly always comes furnished. Georgia Tech tells students its residence hall beds have a twin XL mattress of about 80 by 36 inches, and Rowan University lists a twin XL mattress with every bed in its traditional halls and apartments, adding that larger beds are not offered at all.

Two practical points follow. First, a standard twin will not fit a dorm frame properly: a twin is about 75 inches long, and a twin XL is 80. Second, regular twin sheets will be 5 inches short, which is why every dorm packing list says “twin XL sheets.” If the school mattress is too firm or tired, a topper fixes most complaints for far less than a new mattress, and it moves into the student’s next bed.

Students moving off campus are a different case. A furnished apartment may supply a bed; an unfurnished one usually takes a twin XL or a full. In twin XL, Amerisleep’s AS3 showed a sale price of $849 on one 2026 price tracker, and the Saatva Classic twin XL listed at about $945.

Guest rooms, daybeds and trundles

A mattress slept on ten nights a year does not need a ten-year warranty. It needs to be comfortable enough for a weekend and inexpensive enough that you do not mind if a visiting nephew’s juice box finds it.

Good-value options from the November sale lists include the Allswell Hybrid twin at Walmart for $192 (from $232) and the Siena 10-inch foam twin at $199. For a daybed with a pull-out trundle, check the trundle’s clearance before buying: the lower mattress has to slide under the frame, so it is usually much thinner than the top one, and a standard 10-inch mattress will not fit.

An adult sleeping on a twin every night

Adults in studios, shared rooms and small guest-turned-primary bedrooms are the one group where spending more pays off. A grown body puts real load on a narrow surface, and with only about 38 inches of width, edge support matters: a soft edge turns a twin into a 30-inch bed.

Length matters too. The Better Sleep Council lists a twin at about 38 by 75 inches. Anyone taller than about 5 feet 10 inches will have feet near or past the edge once a pillow takes its share, which is why a twin XL at 80 inches is the better adult size if the room allows.

The adult sweet spot sits roughly between $600 and $1,000 in twin. Sale prices we found in early November: Awara Classic $599, Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro $699 (from $932), DreamCloud Premier $799. The Saatva Classic innerspring hybrid lists at about $895 to $999 in twin. Above that, prices climb fast without much added for one sleeper: Birch Luxe at $1,099, Tempur-Adapt at $1,189 and Essentia Stratami at $2,879 were all on the same sale lists. Those make sense for specific needs, such as an all-natural latex preference, not as a default.

Charges that show up after you pick the mattress

Four states run mandatory mattress recycling programs funded by a per-unit fee at purchase, according to the Mattress Recycling Council and retailers that collect it:

  • California: $18.00 per piece, up from $16.00 on April 1, 2026.
  • Connecticut: $19.50 per unit since October 1, 2026, up from $16.00. Some retailer help pages still show the old figure.
  • Oregon: $22.50 per mattress, in place since the state program started in 2025.
  • Rhode Island: $22.50, up from $20.50 on January 1, 2026.

The fee is charged per piece, so a twin with a box spring counts twice, and Macy’s notes it may be subject to sales tax in some states. No changes to these fees for 2027 had been announced when we checked.

Disposal of the old mattress is the other add-on. Some retailers haul it away for a fee at delivery; otherwise you are looking at a junk removal minimum or your city’s bulky-item pickup. Prices are also exposed to trade policy: a 25% federal Section 232 tariff on upholstered wood furniture has applied since October 2025, though the trade summaries we read did not list mattresses under it, and no mattress-specific price increase for 2027 has been announced.

Twin, twin XL or full: the measurements side by side

Twin: about 38 x 75 inches. Twin XL: about 38 x 80 inches (some dorm mattresses run 36 x 80). Full: about 53 x 75 inches. Figures are the Better Sleep Council’s standard sizes; individual brands vary by an inch or so, so measure the frame before ordering.

Twin mattress questions people ask after the order

How long should a twin mattress last?

The Better Sleep Council says a mattress about seven years old has generally reached the end of its useful life, though quality and how often it is used change that. A guest-room twin used a few weeks a year can last much longer.

Can I put a twin XL mattress on a regular twin bed frame?

Not well. A twin XL is about 5 inches longer than a twin, so it will overhang a standard twin frame or not sit flat inside one with a footboard. The widths match, so a twin mattress on a twin XL frame leaves a gap at the foot instead.

How much does a twin mattress cost on Black Friday?

Early November 2026 sale roundups showed discounts of roughly 15% to 50% off list prices. Examples included the Cocoon Chill twin at $349 from $539, the Helix Kids twin at $599 from $749 and the Birch Luxe twin at $1,099 from $1,373. Budget foam twins see smaller dollar cuts.

Is the mattress recycling fee refunded if I return the mattress?

Often, yes. Avocado’s help page says the recycling charge may be refunded when a mattress is returned. Ask the retailer before you send it back, since policies differ.

Do twin sheets fit a twin XL mattress?

No. Twin sheets are cut for a 75-inch mattress and will not stay on an 80-inch twin XL. Buy sheets labeled twin XL, which most dorm packing lists also recommend.

  • Queen mattress prices, from $300 to $2,000
  • Junk removal prices for hauling off the old mattress
  • Bed bug treatment costs, heat vs spray

The rule of thumb

Spend on a twin in proportion to how many adult nights it will carry. A bunk, trundle or guest bed rarely justifies more than $200; a child’s bed tops out around $600; an adult sleeping on it every night is the only case for $600 to $1,000, and that adult should probably be on a twin XL. And if the sleeper is a college freshman, buy the sheets and keep the money.

Pricing method: prices were researched in November 2026 for 2027 planning and may change. Figures come from IKEA US, Walmart, Saatva and other brand pages, Tom’s Guide’s November 2, 2026 sale roundup, a 2026 mattress price tracker, the Better Sleep Council, the Mattress Recycling Council, university housing pages and the federal bunk bed standard (16 CFR 1213). Sale prices change often. See our disclaimer.
