Used car price 2027: row of used sedans, SUVs and a pickup parked on a dealer lot with blank windshield price placards

Used car prices for 2027 depend most on the age band and segment you shop.

In the spring of 2019, more than half of all used cars sold in the US went for under $20,000. By the spring of 2026, fewer than a third did, according to Edmunds transaction data. Today the average used car on a dealer lot is listed at $27,235 (Cox Automotive, September 2026), the median asking price is about $26,700, and the typical three-year-old car sells for $32,461.

Those averages hide the decision most shoppers are actually making, which is how far up the ladder to climb. Each step of $5,000 to $10,000 buys a younger car with fewer miles, but not at a steady rate. Below we walk up five budget bands, show what each one typically gets you, and mark the point where paying more mostly buys a newer model year rather than a better car. If you are shopping an older car, keep our car repair cost estimator open in another tab; you will want a repair fund.

A pricier, slightly softer market this winter

Retail prices are high but no longer climbing fast. Cox Automotive’s September 2026 average listing price of $27,235 was the highest since December 2022 and nearly 6% above a year earlier, yet it barely moved from August. Supply loosened: dealers had 49 days of used inventory in September, up from 44 in August. Wholesale values, which lead retail by a few months, were up just 2.2% year over year in mid-October on the Manheim index, and Cox trimmed its forecast to have 2026 end only 0.2% above where 2025 finished.

The cheap end is where the squeeze shows. Cars under $15,000 made up 15.7% of used inventory in September, down from 19.4% a year earlier, and they sell faster than anything else on the lot. No one has published a 2027 used price forecast we would rely on. The one trend with real momentum is supply: Edmunds expected roughly 400,000 more lease returns in 2026 than in 2025, which puts more two- to four-year-old cars on lots next year. That matters for the top of the ladder more than the bottom.

Age and mileage for the three lower bands are Edmunds Q2 2026 averages; sales shares are Edmunds Q2 2026; the upper bands use October 2026 listing medians from AutoFinder.

Under $10,000: a decade-old car and a repair budget

This is the fastest-moving band in the country. Edmunds found cars priced $5,000 to $10,000 spent about 25 days on the lot in the second quarter of 2026, quicker than any other price range, and averaged 10.7 years old with mileage past 120,000. Nationally, listings over 150,000 miles carried a median asking price of about $10,400 in October.

A car at this level can be a smart buy, but you are paying for the next owner’s repairs in advance. Brakes, tires, a battery and suspension parts are usually close to due. Shop for condition and paperwork before model, insist on an independent inspection, and hold back part of the budget for first-year repairs instead of spending it all on the car. A $9,000 car with records beats a $7,500 car without them more often than not.

$10,000 to $15,000: four years older than it used to be

No band has changed more since 2019. Back then, $10,000 to $15,000 bought a car averaging 4.7 years and 58,250 miles. In 2026 the same money buys one averaging 8.7 years and 98,222 miles, per Edmunds. Translated: today’s $13,000 commuter is a car that would have sold for well under $10,000 before the pandemic.

That does not make it a bad band. It makes model choice matter more than anywhere else on the ladder. Compact sedans and small hatchbacks from brands with strong reliability records stretch furthest here, because a nine-year-old compact with 95,000 miles has plenty of life left if it was maintained. A nine-year-old luxury SUV at the same price is a different proposition: its parts and labor are priced for its original sticker, not its current one. The 2015 model year, for reference, had a median asking price of about $13,400 in October.

$15,000 to $20,000: the band most families should start in

Here the average car is six years old with about 71,000 miles, according to Edmunds, which is roughly what $10,000 to $15,000 bought in 2019. The 2018 model year had a national median asking price of about $18,000 in October, and the median used sedan of any year listed at about $20,500.

Six years and 70,000 miles is a sweet spot for mainstream cars: past the steepest part of depreciation, usually before timing components, water pumps and major suspension work come due, and new enough to have a backup camera (required on new cars since May 2018) and, often, automatic emergency braking. If you need an SUV, expect this band to buy one a year or two older than the sedan you could get for the same money; SUVs listed at a median of about $27,500 against $20,500 for sedans.

Share of used cars sold for under $20,000: 55.2% in spring 2019, 31.8% in spring 2026.

Edmunds Used Vehicle Market Report, Q2 2026

$20,000 to $30,000: where most listings sit, and where the steepest step hides

Half of all US used listings in October were priced between about $19,100 and $37,000, with a median of $26,664, a median model year of 2023 and median mileage just under 50,000, according to an AutoFinder analysis of 1.8 million dealer listings. In plain terms, $20,000 to $30,000 is the mainstream: 2020 to 2022 cars, compact and midsize SUVs, and most of the inventory you will see online.

It is also where the price of youth jumps. Moving from a typical 2020 car to a typical 2022 car added about $5,900 to the median asking price, the biggest two-year step on the ladder. Many 2021 and 2022 cars were bought new at the height of the shortage, when sticker prices and dealer markups peaked, and their used prices still carry some of that. If you are shopping this band, compare a 2020 with a 2023 or 2024 of the same model before settling on the year in between.

$30,000 and up: nearly-new cars, pickups and the new-car question

More than a third of used sales, 35.8%, closed above $30,000 in the second quarter of 2026, up from 16.8% in 2019. The average three-year-old car sold for $32,461, a record for that quarter. The 2024 model year had a median asking price of about $31,300, cars with under 20,000 miles about $38,800, and used pickups about $35,900. Above $50,000 (8.3% of sales), cars sat for 44 days, the slowest turn on the lot, which is a hint that this is where negotiating room lives.

At this height the comparison is no longer with other used cars but with new ones. A two-year-old car may still have part of its factory warranty, and certified pre-owned programs add more coverage and, at times, subsidized financing; Kelley Blue Book’s October roundup listed certified offers such as 1.99% for 36 months on eligible Honda Civics. Price a new equivalent with incentives before you pay $34,000 for a lightly used one.

What each extra model year cost in October 2026

Put the median asking prices by model year side by side and the ladder stops looking smooth. These are national medians across all segments, so a given model will differ, but the shape is useful:

Step upMedian asking priceAdded costCost per year newer
2015 to 2018$13,421 to $18,020$4,599About $1,530
2018 to 2020$18,020 to $22,287$4,267About $2,130
2020 to 2022$22,287 to $28,194$5,907About $2,950
2022 to 2024$28,194 to $31,330$3,136About $1,570
Our calculation from AutoFinder’s October 2026 median advertised prices by model year.

Two cheap zones stand out. Buying around the 2018 model year (about $18,000) gets you a car with the safety basics at the lowest cost per year. And once you are already near $28,000, stretching to a 2024 costs comparatively little per year, partly because rising lease returns are adding supply of younger cars. The 2021 to 2022 middle is where shoppers tend to overpay for the calendar.

Interest, doc fees and your state change the band you can afford

Most used cars are financed, and the loan quietly adds a band. Edmunds put the average used-car loan in the third quarter of 2026 at $30,703 financed, 10.6% APR and 70.4 months, for a $582 monthly payment on a $3,865 down payment. Multiply it out and those averages imply roughly $10,000 in interest over the life of the loan. A record 6.5% of used buyers committed to payments of $1,000 a month or more.

Then come the fees. Dealer documentation fees are capped in some states and not in others: CarEdge’s 2026 survey lists average doc fees of about $85 in California and $175 in New York, against roughly $699 in North Carolina and Colorado and $999 in Florida. Add sales tax, title and registration, and a car listed at $20,000 can easily need $22,000 or more at signing. Where you live also moves the sticker itself: October median asking prices ran from $23,898 in Virginia to $33,888 in Alaska.

Pricing questions that come up on the lot

Can I trust a used car price calculator?

Treat it as a starting range, not a verdict. Free tools from Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds and J.D. Power estimate value from year, trim, mileage, options and ZIP code, and they often disagree by several hundred dollars. Run the same car through two of them, then compare the result with three or four local listings of similar mileage.

Are Kelley Blue Book used car prices what a dealer will charge?

Not exactly. KBB shows separate figures for trade-in, private party and dealer retail, and a dealer’s asking price usually sits near or above the retail range before negotiation. Use the private party number as a reference point when buying from an individual, and the retail range when you are on a lot.

Does mileage or age matter more to a used car’s price?

Both move the price, but the listing data point to mileage as the sharper break. Nationally, listings under 20,000 miles carried a median asking price of about $38,800 in October 2026, against about $10,400 for those over 150,000 miles. Maintenance records can matter as much as either number for how the car will hold up.

Should I pay for a pre-purchase inspection on a used car?

On almost any car outside a factory warranty, yes. An independent mechanic can catch leaks, frame damage and worn suspension parts that a test drive misses, and a written list of problems is also useful leverage on price. A seller who refuses an inspection is telling you something.

Is buying from a private seller cheaper than a dealer?

Often, because there is no dealer markup or documentation fee, but you give up dealer financing, any implied warranty your state may require and the convenience of the paperwork. In most states you still pay sales or use tax when you register the car, so budget for it either way.

Before the test drive: a six-point price checklist

  • Pick your band by monthly cost, not sticker. Price the loan, insurance and the state’s fees before you choose between $18,000 and $25,000.
  • Price the exact car two ways. Run its VIN, trim and mileage through two valuation tools, then line it up against three local listings.
  • Compare model years on both sides. Check one year older and one or two years newer of the same model; the middle year is not always the value.
  • Get financing quotes first. A credit union preapproval gives you a rate to beat against the dealer’s offer.
  • Ask for the out-the-door price in writing. It should list the doc fee, add-ons, tax and registration line by line.
  • Book an independent inspection. Below $15,000, make the sale conditional on it.

Pricing method: prices were researched in November 2026 for 2027 planning and may change. Figures come from Edmunds’ Q2 2026 used vehicle report and Q3 2026 financing data, Cox Automotive’s September 2026 inventory report and October 2026 Manheim index, AutoFinder’s October 2026 listing analysis, CarEdge’s 2026 doc fee survey and Kelley Blue Book’s October 2026 incentive roundup. Medians and averages describe the national market, not any specific car. See our disclaimer.
