How much does a hospital bed cost: full-electric home hospital bed with side rails set up in a bedroom

A full-electric home hospital bed, the setup most families end up pricing.

The call usually comes from a discharge planner two days before Mom leaves the hospital: she will need a hospital bed at home, and someone has to order one by Thursday. A home hospital bed costs about $500 to $3,000 new for most families, up to roughly $10,000 for low, bariatric or premium models, or $150 to $500 a month to rent. The number that actually decides your bill is how many months the bed will be in the house, and whether Medicare, hospice or another program is supposed to pay for it.

Most families overpay in one of two ways. They rent for a year and a half and spend more than a new bed would have cost, or they buy a $2,500 full-electric bed for a parent whose hospice benefit would have delivered one at no charge. Both mistakes come down to answering the timing and coverage questions before the delivery truck shows up.

Hospital bed prices by type: new, used and rented

Home-care beds come in three motor levels. A manual bed uses hand cranks for the head, foot and height. A semi-electric bed motorizes the head and foot but keeps a crank for height. A full-electric bed puts all three on a hand pendant, which matters more than it sounds if a caregiver is lifting someone in and out several times a day.

Bed typeNewUsed or refurbishedTypical rental
Manual$500 to $1,160Under $500$150 to $250 a month
Semi-electricAbout $1,000 to $3,000 with mattress$300 to $700$200 to $350 a month
Full-electricFrames from about $770; packages $1,500 to $6,000+About $1,000 or less$250 to $500 a month
Low or ultra-low (fall risk)$2,500 to $6,000+Varies widelyUpper end of rental range
Bariatric (600 lb+ capacity)About $1,300 to $8,700Under $1,000 for older unitsOften $400+ a month
Ranges compiled from GoodRx, CareCredit, PayingForSeniorCare and retailer listings checked in November 2026. Rentals often add a $50 to $100 delivery and setup fee.

For a real-world anchor, the Drive Medical Delta Ultra-Light 1000, one of the most common full-electric home frames, has listed around $769 at online medical retailer Carewell for the frame alone, with a 450-pound weight capacity. Add a mattress and half rails and the delivered package lands closer to $1,200 to $1,800. Premium home-care beds with wood-look headboards, built-in exit alarms or ultra-low decks are where prices climb past $5,000.

How many months will you need it? The rent-or-buy math

Divide the purchase price by the monthly rent and you get your break-even month. For typical private-pay numbers, that point arrives somewhere between month five and month ten.

Expected needUsual best move (paying yourself)Why
Under 3 months (surgery recovery)RentPickup, cleaning and repairs are the supplier’s problem
3 to 8 monthsRun the numbers both waysA used bed bought and resold can beat renting
9 months or longerBuy, new or refurbishedRent passes the price of a new bed
Unknown, progressive conditionBuy, or a Medicare rental that converts to ownershipNeeds tend to grow, not shrink

Hypothetical example for illustration, using the ranges above; not a quote from any supplier. A 70-year-old is coming home after a hip fracture, and the surgeon expects six months of limited mobility. A local supplier rents a semi-electric bed with mattress and rails for $250 a month plus a $75 setup fee.

  • Rent for 6 months: $250 x 6 + $75 = $1,575, and the supplier hauls it away.
  • Buy new: a $1,700 semi-electric package, resold for about $500 afterward = $1,200 net, but you handle selling it and storing it in the meantime.
  • Buy refurbished: a $650 dealer-refurbished bed plus a $200 new mattress, resold for $350 = $500 net, with a short warranty.
  • If recovery stretches to 12 months: renting jumps to $3,075, nearly double the new-bed price.

The lesson is not that buying always wins. Renting buys you service and an easy exit, which is worth real money when nobody in the family wants to manage a 150-pound piece of equipment afterward. But if the honest answer to “how long?” is “we don’t know,” lean toward owning.

What Medicare pays for, and the full-electric catch

Original Medicare treats a hospital bed as durable medical equipment under Part B. Coverage requires a prescription from a Medicare-enrolled clinician, a Medicare-enrolled supplier and documentation that the patient meets CMS criteria, such as needing positioning an ordinary bed cannot provide, or needing the head raised more than 30 degrees most of the time because of heart failure, lung disease or aspiration risk.

  • You pay 20%. After the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), Medicare pays 80% of the approved amount and you owe 20% coinsurance, which a Medigap plan may cover.
  • It is a rental first. Hospital beds generally fall under Medicare’s capped rental rules: Medicare pays monthly for up to 13 months, then ownership typically passes to you.
  • Semi-electric is the ceiling. CMS says total electric beds are not reasonable and necessary because powered height adjustment is a convenience feature. If you want full-electric, a supplier may offer it as an upgrade and have you sign an Advance Beneficiary Notice agreeing to pay the difference.
  • Heavy-duty beds are covered for qualifying patients over 350 pounds, with extra heavy-duty models above 600 pounds.
  • Medicare Advantage plans must cover what Original Medicare does but set their own copays, networks and prior-authorization rules. Call the plan before the supplier.

Medicare’s approved rental amounts vary by region and are published in the CMS DMEPOS fee schedule. As an illustration only: if the approved monthly rental in your area were $130, your 20% share would be $26 a month, or about $338 across the full 13 months, plus whatever part of the annual deductible you have not met. That is a fraction of private-pay rent, which is why it pays to ask the doctor’s office for the prescription and paperwork before anyone pulls out a credit card.

On hospice? The bed should cost you nothing

Under the Medicare hospice benefit, the hospice agency provides medical equipment related to the terminal diagnosis, including a hospital bed, typically with no out-of-pocket cost to the family. The agency orders it, schedules delivery and picks it up afterward. Families who rented or bought a bed in the weeks before enrolling in hospice can usually return or stop paying for it. If an agency suggests you supply your own, ask why, and ask to see that in writing.

The mattress and add-ons that double a cheap bed’s price

Online listings for “hospital bed” often mean the frame alone. Check the box contents before comparing prices.

Add-onTypical new priceWho really needs it
Foam hospital mattress$150 to $400Everyone; a household mattress will not fit or flex
Pressure-redistribution or alternating-air mattress$400 to $6,400Anyone in bed most of the day or at risk of bedsores
Half or full rails$40 to $400Fall risk, but ask about entrapment safety first
Overhead trapeze$100 to $800Patients with arm strength who can help reposition
Overbed table$50 to $135Most long-term users
Waterproof mattress protector$60 to $360Anyone with incontinence
Delivery and assembly$0 to $250Anyone without two strong helpers and an afternoon

The mattress is the one place not to economize. A $200 foam pad on a long-term patient can lead to pressure injuries that cost far more, in money and in misery, than an upgraded surface. Medicare covers some support surfaces separately when criteria are met, so ask the clinician to document the need.

Free and low-cost routes most families miss

  • Medicaid: most state programs cover a medically necessary hospital bed, and some home and community-based waivers cover upgrades.
  • VA: enrolled veterans can get beds through VA health care when a VA clinician prescribes one; TRICARE For Life can pick up Medicare’s 20%.
  • Loan closets: churches, senior centers, ALS and MS chapters, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s equipment programs lend gently used beds, often free.
  • Used marketplaces: beds sell quickly on local listings after a death or recovery. Bring someone to test every motor, check the hand pendant and confirm the model has not been recalled.
  • Private insurance: most employer plans cover a bed as durable medical equipment with your normal deductible and coinsurance, sometimes only through in-network suppliers.

What 2027 changes, and what is still unannounced

As of early November 2026, CMS had not yet released the 2027 Part B premium and deductible; it typically announces them in November. Expect the deductible to rise modestly from 2026’s $283. CMS has also finalized a new round of the DMEPOS competitive bidding program set to start no later than January 2028, with contracts awarded during 2027, which may change which suppliers can bill Medicare in your area. Retail bed prices have no announced 2027 schedule; expect similar or slightly higher prices in 2027, especially for imported frames.

Five calls to make before the bed arrives

  1. The doctor or discharge planner: ask for a written order stating the medical reason, the bed type and the expected length of need.
  2. The insurer: confirm coverage, prior authorization and an in-network supplier list.
  3. Two suppliers: get the monthly rental, setup fee, mattress type and whether they accept Medicare assignment.
  4. Hospice, if relevant: confirm the bed is included before ordering anything yourself.
  5. Whoever measures the room: a standard bed is about 36 by 80 inches and needs roughly three feet of clear space on the caregiver side.

Coverage rules differ by plan and state, and this guide is general cost information, not medical or insurance advice. Confirm equipment choices with the patient’s care team and coverage with Medicare (1-800-MEDICARE) or your insurer.

Hospital bed cost questions

How much does it cost to rent a hospital bed for one month?

Private-pay hospital bed rental cost usually runs $150 to $500 for a month, depending on whether it is manual, semi-electric or full-electric and whether a pressure mattress is included. Many suppliers also charge a one-time $50 to $100 delivery and setup fee, and some set a one-month minimum.

How fast can a hospital bed be delivered?

Local medical supply companies can often deliver within 24 to 72 hours, especially for hospital discharges. Online orders typically take several days to two weeks and usually arrive in boxes that you assemble yourself.

How much weight does a home hospital bed hold?

Standard home-care beds are generally rated for about 350 to 450 pounds of patient weight. Bariatric models are rated for 600 pounds or more and are wider, so check doorways and room space before ordering one.

Can I sell or donate a hospital bed when we are done with it?

Yes. Working electric beds resell locally, often for a third to half of the new price, and loan closets, churches and some nonprofits accept donations. Clean it thoroughly and include the hand pendant and manual.

Is an adjustable bed from a furniture store the same as a hospital bed?

No. Consumer adjustable bases raise the head and feet but usually lack height adjustment, rail mounts and the narrower 36-inch deck caregivers need, and insurers do not cover them as medical equipment.
