Through the first nine months of 2026, a hotel room in Waikiki averaged $265 a night. On Maui the same state survey found $538, more than double, for the same ocean. That gap explains most of what a Hawaii vacation costs: a mid-range week for two, flights included, runs about $5,500 to $7,000 on Oahu, $6,500 to $8,500 on Kauai or the Big Island, and $7,500 to $9,500 on Maui, according to trip breakdowns from Blue Hawaiian Concierge. Value-minded couples can get in near $4,000; premium trips start around $10,000.
The island sets the floor and the calendar sets how far above it you land. Below, we map both, using state hotel and visitor data from Hawaii’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), then add the taxes, fees and gate charges that show up only at checkout.
Four islands, four very different nightly rates
Lodging is the line that moves. Food, cars and tours cost roughly the same from island to island; rooms do not. DBEDT’s hotel survey and its visitor spending figures line up almost exactly.
| Island | Hotel average nightly rate, Jan to Sep 2026 | Visitor spending per person per day, 2025 | Mid-range week for two, flights included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oahu (Waikiki) | $281 ($265) | $238 | $5,500 to $7,000 |
| Kauai | $430 | $281 | $6,500 to $8,500 |
| Island of Hawaii (Big Island) | $466 | $245 | $6,500 to $8,500 |
| Maui County | $538 | $305 | $7,500 to $9,500 |
| Statewide | $371 | $260 | $6,000 to $8,500 |
Oahu: cheapest beds, priciest parking
Waikiki has more hotel rooms than any other part of the state, and that supply keeps rates down; DBEDT’s September 2026 figure was $251 a night. The catch is the car. Waikiki hotel parking often runs $40 to $60 a night, so many Oahu visitors skip the rental for most of the stay and pay for one or two days of driving to the North Shore. If you do, our Uber cost estimate guide helps price the rides in between.
Maui: the room eats half the budget
Maui’s resort coasts, Wailea and Kaanapali, pull its average up, and the island’s visitors spend the most per day of the four big islands, $305 per person in 2025. Rates held flat in 2026 after falling 2.4% in 2025, but flat at $538 is still the state’s ceiling outside tiny Lanai, where visitors averaged $625 a day. Condos in Kihei and Napili are the usual escape hatch, but state vacation rental data shows Maui averaging $569 a night across all rental types, so a condo does not automatically save money unless it sleeps more people.
Kauai and the Big Island: the middle, with longer drives
Both sit between Oahu and Maui on room rates, and both need a car every day. The Big Island’s rates rose fastest in the state in 2026, up 8.7%, while Kauai’s dipped in September after Hurricane Lowell made landfall on September 7, which pushed its monthly average to $343. A storm discount is not a strategy, but it is a reminder that Kauai’s rates react quickly to demand. Flights into Lihue or Kona also tend to cost $40 to $130 more per ticket than Honolulu in value season, according to How to Live in Hawaii’s fare tracking, which narrows the savings.
The calendar: September undercuts December by $134 a night
Hawaii’s cheapest weeks are not in winter. DBEDT’s 2025 statewide hotel data ranks the months clearly, and airfare follows the same pattern. The fare ranges below are indicative round-trip economy prices to Honolulu published by How to Live in Hawaii, not quotes, so use them to compare months rather than to budget to the dollar.
| Month | Statewide hotel rate, 2025 | Round trip from the West Coast | Round trip from the East Coast |
|---|---|---|---|
| September | $315 | $290 to $400 | $640 to $840 |
| October | $322 | $300 to $420 | $660 to $860 |
| May | $339 | $300 to $420 | $660 to $860 |
| November | $345 | $320 to $460 | $680 to $900 |
| April | $366 | $340 to $480 | $700 to $920 |
| February and March | $379 | $420 to $680 | $820 to $1,250 |
| July | $386 | $520 to $720 | $980 to $1,350 |
| December | $449 | $350 to $800 | $720 to $1,400 |
The two best windows are the second week of September through mid-October, and the stretch after Easter until early June. The worst are December 18 to January 3, spring break in March, and mid-June to early August. Winter also brings whale season, roughly mid-December to mid-April, which keeps January through March busy even though prices there are only middling.
Put one couple’s week through three versions. This is a worked example built from the averages above, not a quote: seven nights, a West Coast departure, a rental car at $50 a day, $100 per person per day for food and $800 for activities.
| Line | Oahu, September | Maui, September | Maui, holiday week |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two round-trip flights | $700 | $700 | $1,150 |
| Seven hotel nights | $1,855 at $265 | $3,185 at $455 | $4,823 at $689 |
| Lodging taxes at 18.7% | $347 | $596 | $902 |
| Rental car | $350 | $350 | $350 |
| Food | $1,400 | $1,400 | $1,400 |
| Activities | $800 | $800 | $800 |
| Total | $5,452 | $7,031 | $9,425 |
Moving the Maui trip from Christmas to September saves about $2,400, more than switching islands does in the same month. Dates first, island second.
Where you start matters as much as where you land
Visitors from the US East spent $290.50 per person per day in Hawaii in 2025. Visitors from the US West spent $249.
Hawaii DBEDT visitor statistics, December 2025 release
Eastern travelers also stay longer, 9.45 days on average against 8.42 for Westerners, so their trips cost more twice over. Part of it is the ticket. A West Coast couple can often fly for $300 to $700 each round trip; from the Midwest or East, $600 to $1,000 is common. Fares nationally were not cooperating in 2026: the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported airline fares up 22.4% in the 12 months to September 2026, largely on fuel.
- Fly midweek. Expedia’s 2026 data found Tuesday departures average about 14% less than Sunday on domestic routes.
- Book closer than you think for value season. Expedia found the 15-to-30-day window averaged $130 less than booking six months out nationally. Holiday and summer trips are the exception: book those four to seven months ahead.
- Price the hop. Inter-island flights run about $80 to $120 one way booked a month ahead, closer to $150 walk-up. Two islands in one week adds a flight and a day of transit.
- Consider a one-stop through Honolulu if a nonstop to Kahului, Lihue or Kona is much higher. The connection is short and fares can drop.

The 18.7% that appears at checkout
Hawaii’s room taxes went up on January 1, 2026, when Act 96, the so-called Green Fee, raised the state transient accommodations tax from 10.25% to 11%. Each of the four counties adds its own 3% tax, and hotels can pass on general excise tax of up to 4.712%. Stack them and a planning figure of about 18.7% is safe: a $250 room becomes roughly $297 a night.
What about 2027? The Hawaii Department of Taxation’s current instructions list the rate as 11%, with no further step announced. Some 2025 coverage forecast a rise to 12% in 2027, but we found no official schedule for it, so budget at today’s rate and recheck before booking. The Green Fee also extended the tax to cruise fares for 2026, though that part has been tied up in federal court.
Then come the fees that are not taxes. Many resorts charge a daily resort or destination fee, and parking is often separate. Since May 2025, the Federal Trade Commission’s junk fee rule has required hotels and vacation rentals to show the total price, mandatory fees included, up front, so compare the final screen, not the first one. Rental cars carry their own airport surcharges; our rental car price guide breaks those down.
Gate fees and reservations by island
Several of Hawaii’s best-known sights now charge visitors and limit entry. None is expensive on its own, but missing a reservation can cost you the day.
- Hanauma Bay, Oahu: $25 per nonresident 13 and older, paid online with a 2.35% service fee, plus $3 cash parking. Children 12 and under enter free.
- Diamond Head, Oahu: nonresidents must reserve and pay online in advance; Hawaii residents are exempt.
- Haleakala National Park, Maui: $30 per private vehicle, good for three days, plus a $1 sunrise reservation for entry between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., released up to 60 days ahead on recreation.gov.
- Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Big Island: $30 per private vehicle. A $55 Hawaii Tri-Park annual pass covers both national parks plus Puukohola Heiau for US citizens and residents.
Paid tours cost far more than the gates. Booking-site prices from Blue Hawaiian Concierge in mid-2026 put most snorkel sails, luaus and Pearl Harbor tours between $100 and $300 per adult, and helicopter tours from about $327 to $380. A couple can spend $800 to $1,800 a week on activities, which is why the example above uses $800: two tours and a lot of beach.
Hawaii budget questions travelers ask next
How much does it cost to go to Hawaii for a family of four?
Flights, food and activities roughly double compared with a couple, but lodging grows only if you need a second room, and a condo or suite that sleeps four often costs less than two hotel rooms. Price the airfare and the room separately, since those two lines decide most of the difference.
Is a Hawaii vacation package cheaper than booking separately?
Sometimes. Packages that bundle flights, hotel and a car can beat separate bookings, especially for Waikiki hotels, where travelers report warehouse-club packages near $205 to $250 a night. Price the same dates both ways, and check whether resort fees and parking are included before deciding.
Do I need a rental car in Hawaii?
On Maui, Kauai and the Big Island, nearly everyone does. On Oahu, staying in Waikiki without a car and renting for a day or two is common, since hotel parking often costs $40 to $60 a night. Rental cars booked well ahead have run about $40 to $60 a day, with peak weeks above $80.
Is food expensive in Hawaii?
Restaurant meals cost more than on the mainland, but plate lunches, poke counters and food trucks keep daily food spending near $40 to $60 per person. With a sit-down dinner most nights, about $100 per person per day is a realistic budget.
Do I need a passport to visit Hawaii?
No. Hawaii is a US state, so US citizens flying from the mainland need only the identification required for any domestic flight. Check TSA’s current ID rules before you go.
